These are some of the pictures that I took of my recent holiday. I have a few more to sort out and upload to imgur so that I can post them here. The images are from Cape Coast castle and Almina castle, which were two of the key slave castles in the Gold Coast. The big lake is actually a harbour where fishermen land their catch. Right next to it is one of the biggest fishing markets in Africa. I had a bit of an adventure there. But getting the picture was hard enough. On the first day I got there at 11:00AM. By that time the place was full of fishing boats with their masts blocking the view. So I stayed in a local hotel overnight and got down to the market again at 5:30AM to take that shot. My son had asked me to buy some lobsters and prawns whilst there. Where he lives in the capital the price for those things are about four to six times the price in the fish market in Amina. The lobsters are not in season, so there weren't many to buy. The local hotels and restaurants normally buy up the available stock. But they send their buyers at around 7:30AM. By that time I had already made arrangements with the middleman who deals with the sale of lobsters and prawns that I wanted first choice on the goods when the fishermen landed their catch. Eventually he was ready to sell the available catch at 8:00AM. I bought all the lobsters and all of the large prawns. I needed my minder plus some of the fisherman to get me back safely to the car. The stuff the restaurant and hotel people were shouting at me was very coloured to say the least. Their biggest complaint was that as a foreigner I had the money to outbid them. Funnily enough my minder went back last month to shop again for my son. Well, many of the fishermen recognized him and were very keen to do business with him. No doubt they remembered my visit, and the fact that I was prepared to pay close to the asking price instead of haggling too hard .
