Prince - HITNRUN Phase One
Prince, I am hoping no one needs any introduction to him so let me cover why I chose this album. Hit n Run Phase One is the thirty-eighth and penultimate studio album by Prince. It was first released exclusively on Tidal on September 7, 2015 then to CD and Download a week later. His final album was Hit n Run Phase Two which was released in December 2015, three months later than this album. Phase Two was described as one of his best albums to date, going back to the original Prince sound. I did not choose that album as I prefer Phase One. If I want to hear the original Prince sound I can put the Controversy album on for a spin [Stream].
For me Hit n Run Phase One is a great demonstration of how an artist moves with the times and keeps their sound contemporary. There are some elements and tracks which sound like Prince was looking back and celebrating his work. Track one for instance, Million $ Show, starts with a montage of his most recognisable song samples and goes on to tell the story behind the last minute ‘pop-up’ shows he was known for. Since his death stories emerged that they were often money losing, but having been to one of those ‘pop-up’ shows at a small intimate club in London, I am very pleased he did do them.
The album is full of varied tracks, if you don’t like one track try the next as it is likely very different. Like his Diamonds and Pearls album the final two tracks are some of the best on the album, so do make sure you dive through all the tracks. For me my personal favourites are tracks 5, 10 and 11, dare I say track 2 is my least favourite. There is some great bass on the album also, which is always nice.
The album has guest appearances from Rita Ora, Judith Hill, Curly Fryz and Lianne La Havas. Qobuz describes the album as “a record of real sonic experimentation, possessing a creative madness to which perhaps only the extravagant American funk-wizard holds the key”.
Let's see how you get on. Enjoy!
