Very rare I give my own choice 5/5 , this is my most played album since the summer . I was minding my own business listening to the car radio when a song jumped out at me " Goddess on a Highway " , a very catchy tune with a lot of repetitive lyrics . Googled the name and started playing the album from Qobuz , sort of liked it without anything else grabbing me until the third listen . Opus 40 , Holes , great tracks . This album got under my skin and I must have played 30 - 40 times , my only negative remark is I think it lacks a decent close . So who are Mercury Rev ? An Indie rock band from Buffalo , New York State formed in 1989 , Deserter's Songs is their 6th of 14 albums and regarded their best , pretty much 5 Stars all round from the music press . Qobuz

Thanks for putting your choice up for use Barry. I've had this album for what now suddenly seems like a long time. Haven't played it in ages either, so it's about time.

I'm listening now, as more of an aide-mémoire than anything else. I remember the album coming out and loving the arrangements but being unsure about the vocals. They sort of fit the music, but I'm still not sure if I can say I like them. In places they seem a bit too c ontrived, I thought. and apparently still do. If they could get together with Grandaddy and have Jason Lytle on vocals instead of Jonathan Donahue this could have been a 5/ 5 for me, as it is, only 4/ 5 because sometimes the vocals just don't work for me. " Opus 40" is probably the closest to what such a collaboration with Grandaddy might sound like. I think Mercury Rev teaming up with The Flaming Lips could be fun too.

I didn't vote at first as I was undecided. I still am, really.
Deserter's Songs has some very individual singing and production. I'm just not sure I prefer the whole to the parts.
Re: Grandaddy, I find them more melodic.
It has to be 3/5 for now.

This is THE classic Grandaddy track as far as I'm concerned, and it's the first track of theirs I remember hearing . It was a Bob Harris favourite and he played it regularly on his show.

Not quite sure why but I struggled with this one, I found it somewhat irritating in parts, the vocals were annoying on some of the songs. Maybe I am also just becoming and old git, I tried to like it but it just felt contrived to me. 2/5

Replaying this album again after several years, it seems I had almost completely forgotten how it sounded. I was a bit surprised to hear what sounded like Wayne Coyne from Flaming Lips singing in the first track. I did enjoy it, but not as much as I thought I would, so there will be a few more plays to come over the the next few weeks to reacquaint myself with it. Having said all that, I awarded it a 4/5.
