In Spring/Summer I should come into a nice sum of money. The priority is to use my money for a nice home but it will probably have to be out of London, perhaps even in a new country. I am hoping I can keep the Goldnotes (I just love what these speakers do) and get my system up and running again. However I am exploring other options if I do not have the space for them. So I have been exploring High end headphones just to get a feel for what out their. I been putting the same kind of energy as I did with finding the Goldnotes I learnt it is worth investing time and energy into getting this right.
Sennheiser HD820 Lasted about 10 seconds on my head. The treble was far to hot for me.
Audeze LCD-5 Nice open sound, detailed and engaging but something missing that puts me off them. Close but no cigar for me.
Meze Audio Empyrean ELITE Yet again nice headphones but somehow I am expecting to be wowed at this level and I am not experiencing that/
Yamaha YH-5000SE Extremely detailed sounds, kind of remind me of TADs but in headphones. Lots of punch. However, they are just so uncomfortable that I cannot wear them for long. At this price range they really need to address that.
Stax SR X 9000 Wow. Open, detailed, dynamic. But bloody expensive when you factor in the enginezier. I did try a couple more Staxs all were good but the 9000 has a bit more magic.
Thank you Audio Sanctuary

Next up the Warwick Acoustic Sonomo Model one This is a complete system This is probably the headphones I am most disappointed with. Two big issues. The bass is so messy even on something simple like the Nature of Daylight it sounds wrong, throw something with more bass texture and it is a complete mess. The headphones are so tight I only had them on for about 10 mins and I could feel the pressure from them afterwards. I will try the Bravia system as supposed to be a lot better but we see
Thank you PJ Guildford

Have you tried the Focal Utopia, John?
My son loves his Audeze 'phones.

I have not yet tried the Focal headphones but when at PJ Guildford they had a pair but when asked if they had any other headphones too try they told me that they did not specialise in headphones. I did like the Audaze LCD 5 just something missing for me in the high mids and once I noticed it I kept hearing it. If not for that would be high on my list. I like to hear the Abyss 1266 I am worried as they look heavy and would need a big headphone amplifier to get the best out of them.

I have a pair of Utopias and are so far my preferred headphones. I am driving them using a Ferrum OOR / Hypssos fed straight from the analogue output of the Naim DDX2 (the only place in the system that I don't use it just as a transport).

The Ferrum is a nice headphone amplifier

John have you tried the Hifiman Shangri La- Jr? It's the smaller version electrostatic of the far more expensive "senior" model. Hifiman has a massive line of headphones including some very high end stuff.
A step down from there are ZMF and also Kennerton headphones with various models each.
Regarding Abyss have you considered their Diana? The new version is called Diana MR.

A quick update before I start a separate thread. I have ordered a Mjoiner Carbon CC and Stax SR-007 Mk1 in excellent condition from Birgir of Mjoiner

Can you drive the headphone directly from the Mjolnir?

I have resurrected my Grado RS1 headphones. They are almost 20 years old.
Have sent them to Custom Cans to be recabled. Will see what that does.

Picked up a pair of AKG K550 for just over £20 on Wednesday.
A bargain for a reasonable set of closed back headphones.
