Is M8 really 8mm wide ?
Useful to have sizes of bolts expressed as "M8"
However.. I measured various kit and find I have unusual sizes
My Technics feet have 5mm and a bit width. Mana racks are 7mm and a bit Isobarik stands take 9mm ad a bit
I went next door at work and a helpful guy measured them super accurately. He agrees with my by eye measurments
Clues please

I ended up buying different sizes on ebay Mike due to this very problem ... I now have a modest collection!

What a pain !
So supports n' stuff that say almost any size won't fit my kit If we are dealing in mm there cannot be an approximate so perhaps they are all Imperial - surely not ?

Yes it is the diameter in mm.

Unusual to have odd sizes except the very small ones. I can assure you that the Technics is M6, for instance. The Mana is almost certainly M8.

Biggest clue is the TPI (threads per inch) for non metric and individual thread pitch for metric.
Common metric is 0.70mm, 0.75mm, 1.0mm, 1.25mm or even 1.5mm for smaller sizes. (M5 - M10)
It's easier to measure 4 or more pitches and then divide.
I have some imperial thread gauges which have saved countless headaches when the thread form is unknown.
If you are really desperate, send one to me and I'll sort it out for you.
