Tony Allen - A Tribute To Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers
I picked this album by Tony Allen as it showcases his tallent as a drummer, this album also has 4 of the best tunes the Art Blakey And The Jazz Messangers did.
Its only 4 tracks long this album but i think its fantastic.
Tony Allen
Tony Allen was a Nigerian drummer, composer, and songwriter and was the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti's band Africa '70 from 1968 to 1979, and was one of the primary co-founders of the genre of Afrobeat music. Fela once stated that, "without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat." He was described by Brian Eno as "perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived." A lot of western rock and jazz drummers may have achieved greater household name fame, from Art Blakey to Ginger Baker, John Bonham to Keith Moon. But Allen left his own indelible mark on music. Allen was one of the ultimate small-print musicians, whose name on the credits was a guarantee of quality. Most recently played alongside Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn as part of the supergroup The Good, the Bad and the Queen.
The Album
Tony Allen’s new EP, A Tribute to Art Blakey. On the 4-track EP the legendary Nigerian drummer and Afrobeat pioneer best known for his work with Fela Kuti pays tribute to his longstanding idol, the American jazz drummer and Blue Note legend Art Blakey
The EP was recorded live in Allen’s current hometown of Paris and features a fiery 7-piece band interpreting the Jazz Messengers classics “Moanin’,” “A Night In Tunisia,” “Politely” and “Drum Thunder Suite” through an Afrobeat prism. The EP was produced by Vincent Taurelle, whose production credits also include Allen’s previous album Film of Life.

The file will be on the server soon! What a glorious treat. I have long admired the playing of Tony Allen, but this EP had passed me by. A superb set and a nice tribute to Art Blakey. 'Politely' is beautiful done and I found it quite arresting and I thought it the highpoint. I thought the Drum Thunder Suite to be the weakest track, but I am not generally a fan of 'showpiece' works generally, although this was a great showpiece. So 5/5 from me and it is now playing again. open.qobuz.com/album/0060255744397

A very vivid and immediate performance and recording. This is the kind of jazz I like seeing live. I've had an enjoyable 25 minutes with this and it has gone straight into my jazz playlist. I agree with petea about Politely. 4/5 and I didn't "reach for the cash" but I promise I paid Qobuz.

Incredible. This is only the 2nd Tony Allen album I've heard. The other is called The Source.
I've heard so much more traditional jazz that my mind/ears just can't find anything in. Endless meandering.
This is the opposite of that. Fun and engaging, instantly recognizable as Tony Allen. Will refrain from voting yet but this is a winner.
