conrad-johnson EV1 phono stage
I thought I was going to keep this phono stage forever but now I’m not playing vinyl I would like someone else to have the opportunity to enjoy it. It is just far too good to sit unused.
When first bought it had stock tubes which gave a very euphonic, romantic sound that was perfectly suited to classical music, but not the rock and pop I also enjoy where it sounded too soft. So I set about tube rolling and after much experimentation I settled on the following carefully sourced quartet -
12AX7 x 2 - Tungsram NOS 1964 Military Grade (red lettering)
12AU7 - Tungsram NOS 1965
5751 - GE NOS 1953 Black Plate
I have to say that these tubes have a wonderful synergy and transformed the EV1 into the power house it is now, a highly neutral, revealing and dynamic performer that is equally at home with all types of music.
It has MM and MC capability with input impedance setting by dip switches and is good for carts down to about 0.5mv output. For low output MC you need a SUT or headamp. I got amazing results using the combo of an AT-33PTGII cartridge with a Fidelity SUT.
Original RRP of these stages was around the $2.4K mark. The tubes are all very rare now and there’s about £250 in value there. I am also including the stock pair of 12AX7 and single 12AU7.
Physical condition is superb as you can see and barely a mark on it. The original instructions and literature are included, mains cable not included.
I do have the original shipping carton and packaging but collection only at present as I am very wary of sending this type of equipment via courier.
£850 collected from Highgate, London N6. Cash or bank transfer please.
