The Moody Blues - On The Threshold Of A Dream
I was quite surprised that no one has put forward a Moody Blues album before, so here we go.
So why on earth would I choose a Moody Blues album, I hear you ask?
Well there are several reasons. Some of you might think it is trite and contrived, especially if you have not heard it before, but listen carefully and I think you will realise that musically it is a very well crafted album, obviously in true Moodies style.
I was introduced to it by my 5 years older cousin, Linda, in 1969, she also got me listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Monkees, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Alice Cooper, Chicken Shack , Pink Floyd, The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, and early Black Sabbath, I was 11 in 1969.
Christmas 1970, after much pleading, my parents gave me a Decca record player. a few weeks later pocket and Christmas money in hand I purchased ‘On The Threshold Of A Dream’, my first proper album, it was already a firm favourite of mine. As a young lad I was captivated by the music and the lyrics of the songs, somehow the album had a feeling of hope and elation, with a musical dream like quality. Even though the songs all stand out in their own right, to me they seem to flow together as whole creating a rather wonderful album.
‘On The Threshold Of A Dream’ has remained a go to and play favourite throughout my life, perhaps that says something about me. It brings many memories back when I listened to it the first time being so captivated I just replay it again and again, playing it to to friends and girlfriends for the first time, some got it others didn’t, but I still loved it.
I think it is possibly The Moody Blues best album, closely followed by To Our Children's Children's Children from the same year, I have virtually all their studio albums, only missing the last 4 out of 16.
The album also sits with others as a true ground breaker, wiki “On the Threshold of a Dream was released on 25 April 1969 in the UK and 30 May 1969 in the US. On the Threshold of a Dream provided the Moody Blues with their first British number-one album, and also boosted their American fortunes by becoming their first top-20 album there.
The album, along with the subsequent To Our Children's Children's Children , was among the tapes carried by Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden to the moon.”
So that is probably too much from me I will leave you to listen and hopefully enjoy the experience.
