Respighi - Belkis, Queen of ShebaRespighi lived right on the cusp of what would become a whole industry of film soundtrack music. Just before that, his skill was in orchestrating fabulously colourful music that allowed you to picture the events happening. The music might not represent the flavours of the Middle East by our standards now, but it remains hugely evocative. Wonderfully creative music and superbly performed here by the Philharmonia Orchestra. open.qobuz.com/track/150600240

Thanks Martin - I have this recording in my collection, most likely on your recommendation, but not sure if I've listened to it all yet, so this is a good chance to rectify that.

For further listening, there's also this fine recording on RR, which is more mellow but features their characteristic strong bass. open.qobuz.com/track/5164097

I'm struggling with this on latest listening - it just feels badly dated and can't compare with a work like his Pines which is utterly timeless.
I'm not against Orientalist works - Scheherazade does it for me every time. Nothing wrong with the performance or the quality of the scoring here but it kind of reminds me of a soundtrack for a not very good 50's Technicolour epic and I tired of it fairly quickly ... I suspect it would at least be a lot more fun on the big rig and the climax is very well done indeed.

Belkis and Sheherazade both feature great orchestrators.
However, you can't win them all and thanks for giving it a try.
