I know this is a painfully stupid question for all of you. I want to listen to my music wearing my headphones wired to the phones jack on the front of my receiver. I bought a 1/4 to 1/8 pin adapt thinking that when I plug it in the head phones would work but the main speakers wouldn't , with the end goal of relaxing and not irritating the wife. what would you suggest for an alternative set up. TIA. Cheers

I think what you want to do and listen on headphones without the main speakers working as well is possible . It is most likely a settings within the Receiver menu but will change from model to model . If you have it give your manual a good read and you should be able find were the strings for this are . If you bought this unit from a dealer then a quick chat with them could also point you in the right direction .

Sort of thing that happens to me !
If you haven't already check the plugs are in firmly. Take out and out back in again To be super safe turn off the receiver and take in and out a few times
I would expect the speakers to cut out when you have the headphones in Perhaps the adaptor is causing it...

If you let us know what amp you are using we maybe able to explain how to alter to headphones only. Otherwise a dedicated headphone amplifier would be a solution. You could also get a DAP or similar if you wanted to be portable

Some components have speaker switching so that they can be turned off when listening to headphones.
