Sep (2) 2023: Ethel Cain – Preacher's DaughterEthel Cain is the professional name of Hayden Silas Anhedonia, an American performer. The album's title, her religious upbringing and Cain's self-description as transgender, bisexual and autistic probably tells you that there is some inner turmoil here, confirmed by listening to her music. However, she seems a lot more upbeat in videos of her being interviewed. This tallies with Ethel Cain being a kind of adopted persona. The music is dark, reinforced by her characterful mezzo voice. A single, Gibson Girl, was released from the album. For me, the two standout tracks are Family Tree and Thoroughfare. This music will not lift you, it is very dark, introspective and downbeat, but is fascinating, bearing repeated listening. Just try the opening of Thoroughfare for a lesson in simplicity while affirming Cain’s musical credentials. It carries an undercurrent of something more powerful and dangerous. open.qobuz.com/track/170718374

Just played a bit of the first track . . . she's a LDR clone!

Just played a bit of the first track . . . she's a LDR clone! Quite different, I'd say, but I can see why you'd think that.

Well I guess I'm not that familiar with LDR to really be able to make that comparison, as I always run away. But if you played her and said 'who's this?' I'd say LDR. But that's only one song.

I really like the sound world. Trying hard not to hear the depressing lyrics! I think I'd prefer it if the vocals were replaced by a cello or viola. 4/5

I really like the sound world. Thanks, Jerry. That's what first attracted me to it.

Trying hard not to hear the depressing lyrics! Haha, that's the bit I like Jerry . . . but then I am a miserable git!

Haunting sound in the intro, A House In Nebraska, Ptolamaea and August Underground.
She looks a bit like Lana Del Ray on the album cover so that's a plus.
I'll refrain from voting until after this digests but do appreciate the Satanic option. The inclusion of a track like August Underground into this kind of package along with those kinds of vocals definitely adds to the dark charisma.
Something about this vibe reminds me of True Detective Season 1 and Natural Born Killers.

I played this a while back and can't say I was taken too much with it. Giving it one more play.

After another couple of plays, I have given the album a score of 3 out of 5. That would class it as annoying, which I don't think is fair. I can't say I really engaged with it. There were interesting moments, but I don't think I'll be seeking out any more of her work, or playing this again. Thanks for the opportunity to listen to it though, Martin.

This thread needs more people to vote on it! I would like to but I think it would be unfair as I haven't managed to listen to the whole album as I do find it annoying and despite trying more than once, I have to stop. Doesn't' seem right to give something 1/5 without actually listening to the whole thing.
Sorry Martin, but she's not for me, too much LDR going on here for my tastes, as that's who she sounds like . . . and you know my thoughts on her!

Just realised I forgot to mark this. 3, verging in a 4. I wasn't over-keen, it was "interesting" rather than enjoyable for me. Not actually annoying, though.

I take it she is being ironic with track 2 American Teenager as in this is the generic garbage American teenagers listen to .

I take it she is being ironic with track 2 American Teenager as in this is the generic garbage American teenagers listen to . I would say so - an American teenager's dream. "I don't need anything from anyone" says it all. Those of us who have had children know this well.

Had to stop at Thoroughfare as the yodelling got to me
Such a shame as the music is great, well made and her voice is good - when she doesn't yodel 3/5
