Confessing that the music of the so called 2nd Vienna School (and loosing a few friends due to that obsession) I was asked by julesd68 for some recommendations. To start quite easy in this really challenging kind of music I would suggest a try with early Arnold Schönberg. "Verklärte Nacht" in different orchestrations is likely a good entry. Still late romantic, so no fear for too much atonal stuff 😉 Kind of a poem without words. My highly recommended record is the version for String Sextett. A few versions for String Orchestra came later. If you never had listened to this kind of music best start with track 5 and read some biography or the chapter for "Transifigured Night" on Wikipedia. My first choice in streaming services is Qobuz. I like the booklets. But quite sure you will find it everywhere.

Many thanks for this Achim.
I only know VN as an orchestral work so I will look forward to trying your suggestion tonight. We can then move up a gear in difficulty, bring on the atonalism!
For the Spotifyers amongst us ...

I'm afraid I've had Schoenberg foisted on me in concert, as well as Webern's Five Pieces. Sorry to say but I would avoid hearing any of it again

I found it quite accessible, some passages are almost romantic. You know me and " modern" classical, but there are always exceptions.

To be honest (I know many lies are starting this way 😉) Glenn Gould's music and essays brought me on this sideline. To look with a "mathematical view" on some music can be very interesting. Look a the good old Contrapunkt or even Coltrane. Structures, no melodies. But of course I like also and even more the melodies..

To look with a "mathematical view" on some music can be very interesting. Ah, now that you're bringing Bach into the discussion I feel on more solid ground. Some of his piano pieces such as Well Tempered Klavier and, even better, Goldberg Variations are mathematical and truly wonderful! One of the best mathematical pieces for me is Bach's A Musical Offering (Ricercar). You could seriously trip on that music (and follow it up with some Tangerine Dream).

Wow. What an exceptional performance by the Prazak Quartet. Such verve and intensity they bring to this irresistible Gothic melodrama. It's as if their lives truly depended on it, playing right on the edge of their wits.
Only a very basic headphones set up for me this evening, I look forward to unleashing it on the main system in the future as I'll be keeping the album in my collection for sure. Thank you Achim!

Having digested this lovely starter, what is the next course in the 2nd Vienna School road to enlightenment?
