In my view an often much under rated group who had a very good back story before they finally broke through with some excellent pop in the eighties .
I am only going to high light one album and leave everyone to search the others if they wish to . Energy - 1978 has a varied set of numbers and in my view some excellent covers which give the originals a really good run for their money . Dirty Work a Steely Dan song which is just delivered with panache and that languid style that these cynical songs need. Echoes of Love a Doobie Brothers cover which is really nice and gives the song the pop value .
The rest of the album is all good and showcases the excellent to y hears vocals . But then there is the cover that will always be in my favourite top ten songs . And of course it had to be Bruce Sprigsteen who every time a song sung by him comes on has me reaching for the skip button . Fire , not a very big song for Bruce and I am not able to listen to his version for more than thirty seconds before i just have to turn it off . This version however is just the most slinky and emotive song with dramatic pauses , louche vocals and great harmonies . I just want to revel in this song and the stop start of the lyrics . Added to that the backing track is beautiful , understated and supporting of the vocal and adding to the tension .
Ahh well that is enough to I hope at least encourage a few to give this a listen , simple pop is a fair term to describe this but done with great musicians and great voices and arrangements to die for .
