Well did a quick trawl through the threads on here and did not see any mention of this group . Well I really am a huge fan of The Blue Nile and have all of the four albums . To begin at the start they were a Glasgow band in the middle of the Punk era who had their own very intense sound and knew what they wanted to sound like . By chance they signed up with Linn Records and the first album A Walk Across the Rooftops saw the light . Atmospheric , anthemic and intense it was beautifully recorded and played and Paul sings with such heartfelt loss and emotion . Then they went away for about five to six years .
Next they moved record label and Hats the second album came out to very little fanfare or promotion but the die hards were all waiting me included . Hats was an electronic album while the first had more acoustic instruments and colours . But this is the album that proves electronic music still has soul and depth again nothing on this is out of place no weak tracks just amazing music . Guy Garvey of Elbow did a 6 Music interview with Paul Buchanan and if you can find a copy on the net it is well worth a listen and is one of the definitive single album interviews I have ever heard . Then the went away for five or six years .
Album number three Peace At Last then appears and again great recording and every track is wonderful . Paul's voice is getting lower now and this deepens the emotional element even more . Nile fans know what to expect and again nil promotion means only those already in the know are buying this . Then they went away for five or six years .
Last album they are ever likely to release (I would never say this for certain with Blue Nile you never know) was High and like their whole body of work it is wonderful and filled with emotion and atmospheric music .
The Blue Nile are not really like any other group they plough a very straight path and there is a melancholy and sadness to their music which some find too much . If you get it then you will love and much to my surprise they are a great live band and when collected the songs do have light and shade with really powerful rythmic songs as well as the quieter numbers .
So if you have not tried this band then give them a listen and start at the first album .

I first purchased 'Walk Across the Rooftops' on CD and 1998 at PJ HiFi in Guildford when demoing a pair of KEF Ref 3.2 for my 40th Birthday pressent from my better half. I purchased the CD on spec and fell in love with it. I know have all their albums of CD and LP and like them all. They are as you say and acquired taste, in my opinion very accomplished musicians who produce some great music. \ If you search on 'What are you playing right now?" thread you will find that I last listened to 'Walk Across the Rooftops' only on Aug 5, 2023 theaudiostandard.net/post/262452/thread, in fact I might pop another on right now.

I must have missed the memo. I've heard people absolutely rave over 'Walk Across the Rooftops' but it does absolutely nothing for me.

As has been said very much an acquired taste . It would be sad if we all liked the same thing I have tried to like Bruce Springsteen but have never managed to .

May you burn in the Firey Pits of Hell...(!) Sorry, I even bought the album and ended up not playing it. The YouTube video you posted isn't helping either

Not the first time my stance has gathered that sort of reaction. For some reason it seems the be the ultimate audiophile love-in album of all time, and is accompanied by cries of "Heretic" and "Burn the Witch" should one even *hint* it might not be better than perfect..

No time for any of that Nerdiophile nonsense these days... And never bought the album due to Linn's involvement. Always regarded them (Linn) with a certain level of contempt. Got the cd decades later - for the tunes, and Paul Buchanan's voice.
Not at all obsessed - by anyone these days. Always a special place for A Girl Called Eddy, however:
Buy the album just to give it away to people.
No audiophile pretentions, I'm afraid...

"Tar and feather the ageing old rocker, and put him in stocks with head phones on playing ' A Walk Across the Rooftops' on repeat" I could just give up listening to music if I had to listen to that for any length of time.

I was going to add a couple more to this thread but i do not want to cause the partisan posting that this seems to have started . It is only music and I do get that you may not like it but that is fine no need for the insults or the digging at the music . What can I do next ?

You could just see the humour in our postings? Differences in our musical opinions often generate laughter.

You need to understand that we have a sense of humour here, unlike a lot of forums. People are allowed to like, and dislike whatever they choose, without getting into arguments about it; we discuss things, and we joke about them. You should see some of the shit I get for posting Christmas songs, at Christmas.

Nothing wrong with being partisan, personally I think anyone who does not like Prog Rock is musically racist and needs a good slapping.😂
