Can't comment on this without involving Religion and probably Politics. This happened to a lesser degree in the UK - an appalling period in the history of the Church which few knew about at the time. And I say that as a Catholic not someone with anti-religious sentiment knocking from outside. I dare say the religious orders involved thought they were doing good at the time but so does your average Muslim radical.

It is not a proud part of Irish History The Church used to rule life in Ireland My parents have shared a few stories with me around those times that helped me understand life in those times

Can't comment on this without involving Religion and probably Politics. Indeed, especially as, in Ireland, politics and religion are closely intertwined. So not much to say really.
