Adagio for Strings (Samuel Barber)This incredibly beautiful piece by the American composer Samuel Barber, composed in 1936, has become synonymous with images of grief during many times of mourning, including at Barber's own funeral in 1986. It has been voted one of America's most important pieces from the 20th century in more than one poll. There are surprisingly few recordings to be found on streaming platforms and I have chosen this one from Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic. Qobuz open.qobuz.com/track/1775973Spotify YouTube

I do realise how "Marmite" this version is, but I actually like it.

It sounds exactly like a William Orbit 'creation'.

It sounds exactly like a William Orbit 'creation'. What else would it sound like? How about a more traditional, but scaled down, version?

Thanks for reminding me of the William Orbit, Paul. It's a stunning mix, I can imagine it would sound transcendent on a really big club rig. I reckon my Sonus Fabers will love it too ...

I have some amazing memories attached to Adagio for Strings . . every time I hear it I'm right back there in that moment . . . .
This won't make any sense to anyone, but the two are very much connected.

This won't make any sense to anyone, but the two are very much connected. It was playing on the gramophone the Christmas morning you unwrapped " that" present, which ignited your life-long passion for Scalextric. Right?

Haha, that's quite some imagination you've got going there Slinger . . . not quite though.
Le Mans 1991, Wednesday free practice. First year of the brand new pit complex and I'm above the pits with the sun setting and the Mazda is screaming around the circuit, I'd never heard anything quite like it, save maybe a flat 12 Ferrari and in those days I went racing a lot. The new pit complex had a fancy new PA and someone put Adagio for Strings on as the sun was setting and the cars were screaming around . . . nothing sounded quite like the Mazda on full song and that music in the background is now indelibly stamped - I found it incredibly moving as I was already a big fan of the adagio.
Stayed up all night of the race, the whole 24 hours and you could hear and identify the Mazda long before any of the other cars . . . didn't hear the adagio again that weekend, but every time I hear it now I'm back in those pits.

Agreed, that Mazda sounds wonderful. Thank goodness they weren't playing the William Orbit one . . . . that's hard enough to try and forget as it is

I doubt the Orbit version existed in 1991.
