Nik Jones was / is an English folk singer and this is the last of his studio albums, created at the peak of his career. Unfortunately, not long after, he was involved in a car crash when returning home after performing one night and was severely injured which left him unable to play and perform: in 'recent' years he has managed to start to play again. I was not a fan of folk music when younger, but have grown to appreciate it in later life and like that certain traditional songs are kept alive and reworked and performed. They have also entered into mainstream consciousness thanks to TV series such as "The Detectorists" and the new version of "Worzel Gummidge" thanks in no small part to Mackenzie Crook and the work of Johnny Flynn and The Unthanks. Many of the songs on "Penguin Eggs" are traditional compositions and delivered in a fairly traditional manner and accompanied only by acoustic instruments. What lifts this album into almost iconic status for many is the guitar playing of Nic Jones. The album has a theme to some extent too rather than just being a random collection of folk songs, but be warned, there are a couple of 'ear worms' in there that you are likely to find yourself humming for days after! - assuming of course you make it all the way through. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguin_Eggsopen.qobuz.com/album/bv2gyb8acljpb

I remember seeing Nic at a folk club in the (very) early seventies; it might even have been our own in Sevenoaks, but the memory plays tricks when trying to pin down stuff from 50 years ago. I am at a loss to explain why I don't already own this.

Sorry pete this reminds me too much of Richard Thompson and I don't like his singing style either. I just cannot focus on the music very long, it's not doing anything much for me. 2/5 = 4.

Didn't think I knew him but I recognised the style and I think his voice as soon as it started Ye olde English folk sound. Bert Jansch, Tim Hart, Steeleye Span and others This will do nicely
I must know him from somewhere....... Worked it out. Saw a programme on him and his life. BBC prob
