I certainly had my few years there with Joe Satriani and also Steve Vai and to this day I couldn't say which one of the two was more my guy.
Steve Vai had odder creations and a more dynamic sound to his compositions for example like on the EP 'Alien Love Secrets'. Just bizarre fantastic stuff.
But when Joe Satriani was at his best like on albums 'The Extremist' and 'Not Of This Earth' and the song many might remember from Sony commercials, Joe Satriani's 'Summer Song', he was undeniable if you were into his brand of story telling.
Here's a good one from Satriani.

I saw him at the Marquee in London when he first came to the UK. However I got frustrated with his guitar sound and stopped listening to him Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett were both students of Joe

I saw him at the Hammersmith Apollo where he was entertaining but limited. I far prefer his more introverted and soaring moments like Flying.

I saw Eric Johnson, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani on the G3 tour. Adrian Legg opened for them and was mind blowing and their was a stint from a bassist named Mike Watt that got a standing ovation.
I'm not qualified to speak about music the way some are but the first few notes of the leadwork on Flying In A Blue dream are so mesmerizing to me because of the spacing of them I swear it sounds to me like the notes are having slight difficulty getting out or something.
Here is a track from really a great Joe Satriani album guys. The tracks all have a lot of character.

Yup. I remember reading interviews in which he mentioned that's he's such a perfectionist that it's actually detrimental to his work. It took a decade or so to complete Venus Isle.
BTW, I hope G3 fans know of this track from Steve Vai. Fun track.

John Peel didn't play Joe or Steve so I was very late to the party
Got to Steve via Crossroads. Followed that bunny down a hole that became Joe Flying in a blue dream and The Extremist are both wonderful and hard to pick a winner

Adrian Legg is on of my favourite players, and a true one-off. I had a long, rambling, phone conversation with him one afternoon, and he's a thoroughly nice guy too.

Wow Paul, that's amazing. Can you say anything else about Adrian Legg and also about that conversation you had with him? In my case I'd never heard of him and he wasn't my style but he was undeniable. He sat there and mesmerized a crowd who'd gone to see Steve Vai and Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson.
I remember the night well I'd introduced a friend who I'd grown up with like blood brothers as guitarists to my newest best friend in high school and the 3 of us went to.the concert. Then later that year that friend passed away.
And for some reason bizarre reason I have the ticket stub floating around in my room these days. I've moved countless times and its the one artifact that has made its way back to me after all of these years is the ticket to that concert. Apologies for the novel.
Hey Mike, I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I first saw Crossroads.
Steve Vai played Jack Butler, the devil's guitarist the way Daniel Webster played Jabez Stone's lawyer in the short story 'The Devil And Daniel Webster'. I'd highly recommend this short story to anybody.
