Worth a thread to itself with what I've just learnt
The boss needs to get around as her car is off the road with, so far problem unsolved. Maybe ECU
Local car hire companies with 2 coming up favourite.
Kenning who I've used before mostly for vans Good prices
Enterprise, mentioned by step son as having a pick up and drive back home *free* service. Started with them Vast amount of choice in days and hours. Played around with the various options Puzzling that you can take one day off and the price goes *up* Conversely add a day and the price can go down Rang help and the reply was they priced per day. Vaguely true but worth checking out. Auto Ford Focus or similar 6 days £315
Had a look at Kenning 1 week £206
No competition I'll cycle over or take a taxi Start booking
Plus £60 for Collision Damage Waiver and that only brings it down from £1500 to about £700 from memory Plus £25 for second driver
Hmm
Back to Enterprise CDW included. Doubt we need 2nd driver so price much the same and easier
Will update as we go along

They mostly only have a very basic CDW. I always take out the additional, especially when in the US as I do not trust their litigious nature.
Make absolutely sure to check the car for any damage, dings or scratches. They will try to charge you for them if they have not noted them.

A good look all around and photos taken before we drive off
It is possible we are covered for CDW with the existing car insurance. Waiting on a reply which may be useful in the future, not this time. Looked around the web to find the CDW cover I have heard of to find only one so far at £60 a year
Do you insure separately for CDW ?

Do you insure separately for CDW ? No, but then I mostly rent abroad. I will have a rental delivered on Thursday, though, and I did take out the extra CDW for that.

Always with the rental company. I wouldn't trust any other CDW to provide the appropriate cover.
Correction: I don't trust any insurance company, full stop.

This may be the company I used before holidays were suspended by Covid, never had to claim so don’t know how good it actually it is, some hire companies queried the cover note from them, others were ‘oh yes, that’s fine’.

The rental dropped off today is a shiny new Audi A3 35 Sport, which is about as sporty as a milk float. Why dress it up to look like something it isn't? Limp, anodyne, detached mess of softly sprung, unresponsive rubbish. 1.5l engine indeed, what a joke.
Due to a SNAFU by the repair company, they are waiting for parts so the rental has to go back tomorrow. What a shame - not!

And madam now has a Toyota Yaris hybrid
Small car, but feels very well made and gives the impression of a much bigger car inside The modern small car perhaps. I'm impressed
Here's another wrinkle in pricing The insurance excess on the car is £1500 - unless we cough up another £90 to bring it down to £100 First time I heard about it was when we were about to drive off Makes a £300 hire £400
So CDW and insurance as separate items
Next time I will revisit Kenning as I learn my way around

Comment from the boss on the Yaris
Comfy enough but no poke after 45mph
HOT Saabs (High output Turbo, 2.3 litre) are super car performance and perfect for a nut job like you
I remember the first time I put my foot down when I borrowed it, and I had a Saab 9000 2.3 turbo Insane

Update on the Yaris and rental cars
I was taken with the Yaris having driven Saab Turbos for the last 30 odd years
We drove 50 odd miles yesterday, mostly motorway
60 mph is the sensible top speed. It will stuggle up to 70 if you push hard, but not up hills
Comfort had me wondering. Didn't feel right
As soon as I sat in and drove a loan Saab 9.5 I felt so much more comfortable. Sooooo much better More oomph from probably a 2 litre non turbo
Food for thought
Car rental and loans could help you find the car you want

I have a new date for my car repair (they now have the bumper) of 17 May.
A new rental beckons; please let it not be that Audi with the chrome bling and elastic band engine.

Compare running costs and eco credentials for an eye opener...

Now, the GR Yaris is something else altogether. I followed one a while ago and it took everything I had to keep up with it.
