Ligeti Six Bagatelles - Quintette a Vent Claude Debussy (2009)Here's a choice unlike any of my usual classical fayre. I'm a bit of a Ligeti fan and when I was introduced to these bagatelles by a friend many years ago, I just really liked them and have done ever since. They were written between 1951-53, by Ligeti originally for piano. He later transcribed them for wind quintet. From The Listener's Club: "Ligeti transcribed excerpts from the collection to create the colorfully whimsical Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet. Each of the movements evokes a distinct atmosphere. Throughout the work, we hear echoes of Hungarian folk music." I have selected the work I originally heard and still have a copy of on CD, by the Quintette a Vent Claude Debussy. The recording is close mic'd and excellent. open.qobuz.com/track/139122854

A 3 for me. It reminds me too much of Vernon Eliott's "Noggin The Nog" and "Ivor The Engine" music.

Yes it's very evocative music indeed and reminds me of all kinds!
Love the dynamics and energy of the 1st. I get quite a whiff of Dvorak's New World here ... The searing oboe of the 2nd goes on to sound quasi-industrial. The 3rd - what on earth is going on here - it's Battlestar Galactica!!! The rest of the music has an almost Jerry Goldsmith, Planet of the Apes, discordant feel to it.
Top notch performances, fully committed, an easy 4/5.

Found it all a bit discordant - interesting nonetheless but not something I would return to. Noggin the Nog made me laugh and I can see the similarity, it does conjure up cartoon images if you visualise what it might fit.
I didn't find it 'captivating' but for the quality of the players it deserves a 3.

A new recording of the Ligeti from the excellent group Les Siecles should be good.
