Had Isobariks for years and kept the covers on. I preferred the look. Even bought more when they disintegrated Think I tried a test with covers off then on many years ago - not conclusive from what I remember
When Tony brought the TAD E1s along the took the covers off immediately, muttering something about "you won't need *these* "
Fast forward to a couple of weeks back Madam's grand daughters coming for a visit. I'll put the covers on for safety Thought there was a drop in sound quality.
Left them. Test today.
Covers on Familiar track. L'Arpeggiata. Maybe not perfect Played again with covers still on to make sure
Covers off More detail, sounded nicer, louder
Covers back on to double check Yup, slightly muted, not so nice to listen to
They are staying off, except maybe for protection from little fingers and bodies
Have you tried yours off ?

Had the same experience years ago with my Monitor Audio 20 sec Mike. l lived with the covers on for years, simply due my young Kids. This actually was a blessing, as l was able to sell them after some 18 years of ownership. These days is covers off. But your correct, you loose a bit of snap and air with covers on.

My Harbeth SHL5s were voiced to play with the grilles on as recommended by Alan Shaw - for me he was right, I much preferred them with the grilles on. My current KEF LS50 Metas don't have any grilles and they sound just great as they are - I guess a lot depends on how the were intended to be listened to? All my music buddies have their grilles off, for an assortment of different speakers. To them it's sacrilege to listen to speakers 'covered' up

My ES11 covers are big lumps of solid plastic, so choices are a bit limited. My Monitor Audio silver 2s I prefer with the covers on.

No covers for my Usher mids and tweeters, they have their own protective metal grills. I leave the bass covers in place as they're not really meant to be removed.

Horns with covers, that'd be a new one😂 Compression drivers do have fly screens. Ribbons have mesh. Does that count? 🙂
I have had to put a cat 🐈 proofing grilles on tapped horn sub exits. It's a coarse mesh. To stop our cats going along the 4.8m of internal horn run! They never bothered when they were vertical. Horizontal too much temptation.

I had some covers made for my speakers using blackout material to stop the wood from fading in the sun. The speakers sound much better with these removed.

What surprises me is the material is incredibly thin. Cannot understand why it makes such a noticeable difference A clue is that my top tweeter drives have no covers at all

Whether or not you can hear it..? Time aligning (upper frequency drivers especially), has the same effect. It changes the focus - if that make sense?

Makes more sense than some of the mad things we have discovered recently My guess is that the Isobariks would have sounded better as my comparison was many years ago with much upgrading following

Playing through my wonderful album playlist sans speaker covers
I had wondered if I was missing something last time with the covers on
I was.
All back now, fabulous sound This is not subtle

My speakers are really ugly with the grilles off and they have a horn flare on the tweeter so they do in fact sound better with them on.

I have Quad ESL 57 so covers on is essential for safety reasons .
