I think I remember there were some sms-200 users here and wondered if they ever tried other software, as it appears the O/S is on a removable micro SD card. I'm interested if it might accept Volumio 3. I've tried to find the actual hardware specifications, but it doesn't look like SOtM share that? Also, are there any current users here? Maybe sacrilege to ask that on a Sonore/Gustard forum, but I like walking near the edge

Maybe sacrilege to ask that on a Sonore/Gustard forum, but I like walking near the edge Do you mean here? There's a few of us that have gravitated towards their kit because they are genuinely excellent, but many members use other kit, too!

Haha, I knew if I lobbed that juicy worm in the pond, someone would take it. I'm just messin' . . . sometimes I just can't help it! Yes, it is very good kit, outstanding value/performance ratio.

I'm sure I've seen a couple of members with SOtM kit, but I can't remember who now.

I used to have a ultra neo and got rid of it as had issues with the GUI it stopped doing Spotify for awhile and waited patiently for a few months before giving up on it. I also found it a bit slow. Moved onto the Limetree bridge but could be buggy and just a hint of harshness in it. I went to Sonoroe mini and now the IFi Zen stream. No experience around if you can use Volumio 3 on the Neo.

Thanks John, you've saved me a bit of work there. I was looking at the Limetree but have heard before people thinking it a bit bright/harsh, which is definitely a no no for me. There are so many streamers out there now, it's a minefield for choice and that's before I decide to either stay with Tidal, switch back to Spotify and move up to Qobuz . . . . my heads starting to hurt!

the O/S is on a removable micro SD card. The Sonore models also run the OS on a microSD card, but as far as I know only Sonic Orbiter runs on them. Volumio used to support quite a few single board computers, but now only list Pi, PC and Tinkerboard as compatible.

The mark 2 version of the Limetree might be better Do consider the IFI Zen Stream as Speedy Steve says it pretty close to the Sonoroe (nearly half the price) without a hint of harshness. Its main issues are the quirky design looks and a bit of a pain if using WiFi to set up. It uses a custom version of Volumio. I think if using a lot of files rather than streaming it be best to consider something else.

I know they used to use an off the self board for the MicroRendu MartinT with a dual core ARM A9 CPU, so in theory it should run Volumio. Still, I am learning a lot of new stuff with all this research, so that's always a good thing

Its main issues are the quirky design looks Yes, it looks dreadful, but I could always hide it I suppose and WiFi isn't an issue as I never use that for music, other than a controller. The Pro-Ject Stream Box S2 Ultra is rising to the top of choices at the moment, that's a custom Pro-Ject version of Volumio too. The file based audio bit won't be an issue though John as whatever I choose will only act as a DNLA renderer, all the FLAC file handling and database is taken care of by JRiver, which is running on a reasonably powerful mini PC. The 'end point' as it were won't have much to do, so it doesn't need to be powerful, just act as a network bridge.

I once heard the project box at Martin and it was good sounding Hans Beekhuyzen reviews it positively as well - I like that it has the ability to rip CDs and has a USB port for external drives too. I like Volumio, been nothing but impressed by it as a renderer, for both stability and sound quality . . . it's not brilliant as an OS by itself for serving up files and running a large FLAC file database, far too clunky, but acting purely as a music player I think its good and I like how it sounds. Pro-Ject have done a good job adding pixie dust to it, as it seems to be a modded Pi running Volumio.
