I spent most of my teenage years and the first half of my twenties hanging around some strange places where music was played in some form or another. This gave me a taste for bass in its various forms that I have been keen to recreate in at least small measures from whatever system I owned. But that's fine for the living or music room. What about other locations? I tried to do the best with my dining room system by adding a subwoofer to the wall mounted bookshelf speakers. But I was still not satisfied that I was getting the best bass performance.
Then a friend brought a so called portable party speaker to the reception after the funeral of my mother. I was mightily impressed with the sound, so started doing a bit of research on these portable party speakers. I ended up getting a Sharp SP-929 to dip my toes in the water. Brilliant sound, but bass was nowhere what I expected. A friend of mine asked me if I could set up a system for her to use at her birthday, so I lent her the Sharp instead to try. An hour later her husband called for my bank details. He was not returning the speaker to me. He had fallen in love with the sound...
So I then decided to take my time and do a lot more research into these portable speakers. I then came across the JBL 310, which is just out of this world if you like bass or any kind. Loads of crazy Youtube clips if you want to get an idea of how highly the JBL is rated in even villages deep in no man's land.
The sound is a bit inwards in the mids, which takes a while to get used to. But the bass goes deep. I am talking door frame shaking deep. Disco, reggae, and dance music are now well lively. Organ music is out of this world. My daughter came down from the loft to see what was vibrating the loft boards. Tried it in the garden and the neighbour came to see what was going on. I couldn't be happier, except that my eldest son now wants me to ship one by sea to him in Africa...
