stellabagpuss you should try JRiver with your music library on a Windows 10 PC somewhere on your network away from your listening room, with a NUC or similar on the other end with Volumio just acting as a renderer, bridge or endpoint, depending on how you describe that part of the chain, but they're all the same thing. JRiver will automatically identify DNLA or UPnP devices on the network, once you activate DNLA in the options. It then pops up as a player in the Playing Now pane. From what I gather you have all those things, so there's no financial outlay, just time. You might be surprised by the results, even with Windows. Then you have the power and usability of JRiver to manage your music library, with your endpoint isolated so any clock signal issues via USB are eliminated. Splitting the database function and the audio transport gives you more positives than negatives. If that endpoint can be powered well with a short or even direct USB link, you can get another step up. In my experience this is a lot better than going direct to a DAC even with JRiver on a Linux PC.

lt's something l have already tried Tim, using jriver and Plex on my other NAS.
Although the sound was not terrible, l preferred USB output from the NUC. My NUC has it's SSD drive sheilded outside the PC,it's has it's own psu. Doing this was a big game changer Audio wise,as well as running Zero Zone 01 PSU on the NUC. The best Audio wise that l have experienced using DNLA was with a ifi Zen Stream, however l still found replay using a hard drive or USB superior, and a similar outcome via NUC,but it's personal thing,l only play WAV,not Flac, as there's a difference to be heard,WAV sounds more relaxed and natural than FLAC. It also great to hear difference methods.

That doesn't sound exactly like what I meant, but no matter, it's all fun. Sounds like you are in full on ‘tinkering mode’, so I’ll enjoy reading your blog for your findings. I can then vicariously experience your journey without having to do any work myself – plagiarism is best

You also touched on an interesting point, additional traffic on your network, although l have low noise psu's on my switches and routers, my kids are flat out using the Internet,so that could have bearing on audio quality. Also one thing l forgot to mention, and it makes a major difference, l reclock the NUC usb output before it reaches the DAC, using a Leaf Audio device, l then output l2s to the Gustard R26.
It's all good fun...

my kids are flat out using the Internet,so that could have bearing on audio quality. It definitely could. It's one reason why I have a different 4G service and router just for music streaming, keeping the additional traffic down to just the streamer sending BubbleUPnP progress updates. If Ruth is streaming 4K video next door, it doesn't have any impact.

I have to say Martin and I do take the piss at times, but you know me and luckily don't (often) take offence, but it is quite awe inspiring the lengths you go to, whatever path you decide to go down. I wonder how many do the above? A system like yours isn't something I would ever want to do, or could ever afford, but it is thought provoking and I admire your dogged determination to never stop, no matter how much ribbing you get! I love watching Steve Guttenberg's viewer system of the day . . . . we are all basically doing the same thing, just playing music, but my goodness how many different ways there are to do that. Pretty cool really

Thanks, Tim, the extra 4G service only costs me £18/mo and that's for 100GB data which is plenty for a month's worth of hi-res streaming. What I did find, almost by accident, is that the air-gapped nature of 4G gives better sound quality than any line-based internet service. Nice!

That actually makes total sense to me Martin, your chain appears to be as clean and noise free as it can be, so your background must be a black void of nothingness. Nice indeed.

Have to give a quick shout out for Roon's excellent customer service. I contacted them requesting all my account details be deleted and I got a very prompt and comprehensive reply confirming everything had been done as requested, including my credit card details and personal details. They even directed me toward that very large database of information I mentioned, as being the only other area where my personal information in relation to my Roon account was held, so I should delete that too, which I already had anyway. I gave them some feedback about why I was leaving and got another very prompt response, with what seemed a genuine thankyou and sorry to see you go, saying just to contact them if I ever wanted to come back and they would give me another free trial. I won't quote directly as I don't like doing that, but they also said it had been a very hard decision for the team to make regarding the Internet dependency of Roon 2.0 and were really sorry this wasn't a good fit for me and they appreciated the follow up offering them a little more context, saying it's more helpful than you know. So kudos for Roon and their excellent customer service team
