I'm looking to buy a new or second hand hand turntable. This time I'm not sure whether to go with a direct drive instead of a belt drive. I have £1500 to spend. What you recommend and has one got advantages over the other, which should I go for? Thanks

Agreed, buy an SL-1210, there are many used examples available. Superb direct drive motor, decent arm (which can be changed).

If you get something second hand you get quite a nice deck. Enjoy what ever you decide to go for

I saw Garrard 401 imho a match for the 1210 and would reckon would beat it unless the 1210 has a few upgrades But you will need to check when last serviced The 1210 is nice deck I heard Martin a few times but it was heavily modified. Sa

Thanks, The Technics 1210gr seems quite good. Unless its not as good as it seems. Which I'm sure someone will tell me.

You can't bet getting out and listening to some options. Why not listen to some stuff without worrying what kind of drive system it has? It's healthy not to have preconceptions! As John suggests, idlers shouldn't be forgotten.

Not intended to favour one over the other. It's his discovery of vinyl.
Goes on a bit:

Thanks Belt drive with heavy platter with lots of inertia, and good isolation, or DD with excellent electronics to keep it stable, and again good isolation, a denser platter will give better bass/depth.

Belt drive with heavy platter with lots of inertia, and good isolation, or DD with excellent electronics to keep it stable, and again good isolation, a denser platter will give better bass/depth. Tbh im swinging towards belt drive with a big platter. I heard a Brinkman Bardo DD and that was the DD to end all DDs IMHO but then it is £13.5K new, so a bit of fantasy land. For a belter heavy platter you will not go far wrong with this, I have the same, yes it is quite a bot over budget but if you are dedicated to vinyl then IMO unless you spend over £10K. Put a reasonably good cartridge on it and you will not look back, I run a Micro Benz LP-S and it sings. 2ndhandhifi.co.uk/product/pro-ject-signature-10-turntable-olive-audio-technica-at-33-cartridge-mcru-power-supply/

I have a load of different decks, my lencos, a jbe dd, jvc dd, roksan xerxes, technics sl150, a 301, you are welcome to call in some time for a listen to a few.
Dont take an internet opinion as anything other than that. Ive got all drive types and enjoy all of them in different ways, listen first. Mr smiths opinion is not likely to be exactly the same as your own Just because you have a budget of 1500 quid there is no reason to spend it all just because you can. There are hundreds of choices
