Saint-Saëns wrote the Carnival as a humorous piece for performance with friends only. For this reason, he prohibited public performance during his lifetime, which is a shame as the Carnival has proven very popular in modern times, especially with children. The lustrous movement of fish in the aquarium is wonderfully represented in music. I have chosen this new-ish (2017) recording with Pappano and the wonderful Martha Argerich on piano. open.qobuz.com/track/43176017Please comment freely. That's a superb organ at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester.
