You may have heard the reaction against the latest U2 album being automatically downloaded to iTune accounts. Apparently some people object to this even though it is free and a remove app has had to be provided. Now I am not a user of iTunes but isn't there a setting that prevents that and can't the numpties who use iTunes work out how to delete it themselves. I can understand people not wanting it as I would feel the same about any rap album appearing in my account (if I had one). However complaining about free stuff and not being technically competent to remove it does make me wonder about these people.
Anyway not knowing the stupidity level of their users has resulted in a big negative publicity for Apple and U2. The album called 'Songs Of Innocence' had no prior announcement and there is yet no physical media release listed on Amazon. I think this is a worrying trend and I am wondering if negative reviews not based on the music will delay or cancel a physical release. Let's hope a vinyl release follows so I can torture myself once again listening to another slightly disappointing album in the hope it might be a 'Joshua Tree' or 'All that You Can't Leave Behind'. I hope U2 can be judged on their music and not this fiasco or Bono's numpty status.

I think this is Apple's doing rather than the band and reflects on the twonks who's entire music knowledge is based on downloads.

Well, I think I'd be slightly peeved if any kind of content was automatically downloaded to my machine without my agreeing to it - the fact that it can be subsequently deleted is neither here nor there. So, I doubt the complaint is about being offered free music; rather, it's about having the choice of whether or not to download that music being taken out of one's hands. It would be far more sensible simply to provide a link to the free download and then let people decide for themselves. Of course, Apple users shouldn't be surprised by this kind of thing - the creeping employment of such practices was what prompted me to ditch iTunes and iPods entirely, despite being an enthusiastic 'early adopter'.
I don't understand the link you're making between downloading and musical knowledge.

I don't understand the link you're making between downloading and musical knowledge. Should have said that the problem with some users is they never heard of U2. LOL. If this is common practice by Apple why not the fuss about other titles ?

I think this is probably the first time they've done this - my point was just that it's arguably part of a wider pattern of Apple presuming to take certain decisions out of the hands of their users, not always in a way that's irreversible or disagreeable of course, but still if (like me) you're particular about the way that you do certain things, then it can be pretty irksome.

It's only to be expected with iTunes, pile of shite that it is*.
*I view it with the same disdain that I used to have for those free AOL CDs on the front of all PC magazines, designed to royally stuff your machine in a tortuous and irreversible manner.

Anyone know the difference between Bono and God?
God doesn't walk down the street in sunglasses thinking he's Bono.

You seem to view a lot of things/people with disdain. I haven't been 'given' this U2 album yet. If only it was a free copy of the impending new release by the mighty Half Man Half Biscuit: www.chrisrand.com/hmhb/breaking-news/'According to Amazon, which seems to have beaten everyone else to it once again (there is no escape, it seems), “Urge For Offal” is out on October 20th.'

I had better get word out to Dave that there is going to be a riot in Trumpton....

You seem to view a lot of things/people with disdain. Really? Apart from the behaviour of Apple, what are these things?
I say this because I'm usually a fairly tolerant person so I'd like to know where I'm going wrong.

From memory: People who don't know how to fix things (in Paul Barker's blog thread) People who can't 'do' metric measurements (though you used the word 'contempt' rather than disdain) OK, that's only three, but the forums's not been going that long.

Hah! You need to differentiate more. It's only Apple that I hold in serious contempt Justification: our students have a population of about 400 devices, 40% of which are Apple products. This 40% obeys the 80:20 rule and tie us down with countless failures, cryptic problems, inability to undo software installations that have gone wrong and a general lack of tools available to effect repairs of any kind, not to mention the horrible tangle they get into when they are allowed to completely fill their disk space. Or their ability to continually forget network shares, proxy details, Wi-Fi setup etc. Our hearts sink when we see 'white goods' approaching. Meanwhile, the Windows devices just work and are easy to repair. I know the fanboys will go on the attack here, but individual stories of how wonderful a Mac/iPad is hold no truck with us. It's when taken en mass that they are truly horrible to support. And then I read of fools queueing for days on end to get a new bloody phone. These people need psychiatric help.

That's students for you. I remember years back when I used to visit lots of universities, there was always one bloke who knew how everything worked, especially the network which was a slightly arcane subject in those days. He was usually in his late 30s, with long hair in a pony tail, wore a Grateful Dead T shirt, and sat by himself in a battered old swivel chair. One such bloke had made a square boundary of black and yellow tape around his chair, with a sign reading: 'No undergraduates beyond this point'.
