Semantics and not that it matters that much anyway but
I insist I am not an Audiophile
I'm a Muso or Musophile or Music nut or some such
Used to accept being an Audiophile grudgingly now I insist I am not
It's the music. The kit is only an enabler

Why does it have to be one or the other?
Surely the reason we are all here is an appreciation of music, and kit that delivers musical satisfaction.
"It's all about the music"
Who knew??
You see this mantra repeated a lot on hifi forums. As though there is perhaps some kind of implied shame about the enjoyment of building a satisfying system and enjoying kit too. Each to their own, there is no 'moral superiority' in this.

I am both an audiophile and musophile. Without music, there would be no hi-fi systems. At the same time, I care unashamedly about sound quality.

I am and probably always have been a muso, or some more accurate definition of that if there is one
Good kit gives me more music
Some are heavily into kit with a few who play very little music.
If that's what anyone wants I'm happy for them to be happy
Audiophile sounds wrong to describe me.
No moral superiority here

Absolutely Mike. Just to be totally clear, the "superiority" bit wasn't remotely in reference to you!!
Another word for "audiophile" would be good but not sure anyone has coined anything better ...

Doesn't quite have the ring of 'Audiophile', though.

Doesn't quite have the ring of 'Audiophile', though. Interesting though Thinking about other descriptions Cyclist - Bikeophile Vegan - Plantophile Dog lover - Dogophile - could mean something else of course... Revelling in the sounds of Bajofondo Remixed, not wanting to move. Sun comes out at last. Real light ! Crosses my mind I could bring my very dirty bike in here to replace the broken back mudguard. Maybe not, cream carpet. Madam may not be amused either

I'll give you a clue about me. On music forums (e.g. musical instrument forums etc.) where the name "Slinger" is already taken, I usually style myself "UK_Muso".
True Musos love music, and gear is purely a means to an end. End of story. A necessary evil if you will, required only to listen to their music.
Audiophiles love gear first, and music a very distant second. Music is something they need so that they can listen to their systems, although some prefer to play test tones instead, so they can judge the musicality of their systems properly.
Many audiophiles are so embarrassed by their lack of humanity that they pretend to be Musos, just to fit in.
A real Muso will never, ever, pretend to be an Audiophile unless he happens to be taking the piss out of Audiophiles down the pub, or on a forum where they are known to congregate to swap measurements and numbers, along with equations relating to the latest 10th level Butterworth one of their external crossovers is now running.
Ich bin ein Muso.

Definition of Audiophile depends on who is defining.
I looked !
In some ways we could both be audiophiles. Carries a lot of baggage though

Perhaps I operate a very effective filter, but I've never met such a person. Everyone I come across in our little community talks about music at length. Otherwise, I wouldn't be interested in seeing them again.

I asked madam how she would describe me A collector of sounds She can come up some good ones, quite good with words too My lovely wife very recently after I purchased another pice of equipment said "I just don't get it, what do you hear different, its the same music?" , I suppose in a way she is absolutely right. I would say I am some who loves music, but likes to hear it played as best it can be with the budgetary and room limitations that I am constrained with. So presumable a Muso and Audiophile, so maybe a Musaudiophile?

Good words and phrases all her own She has come to love certain albums All about hearing more music for me Music nut might be the best way to describe me

I'd be very happy to have wonderful sounds without seeing the kit. All black on black racks helps
