Riddle me this, please gents, what does one look for in an external clock?
Apart from square wave and sine wave, is there anything in terms of specs that can tell you it will be a high quality performer?

The phase noise at 10Hz is the most often quoted measure of 'goodness' for an audio clock. Here are the performances for the AfterDark range, to give you a clue. For comparison, the BG7TBL clock I started with has a phase noise of around -120dB @ 10Hz.

The Mutec Ref10 SE120 clock is well regarded. I used one with an EtherREGEN until I switched to the Innuos PhoenixNET re-clocker and SteveC uses one as well still I think. The PhoenixNET uses an internal clock with a very high specification, but running at 25 MHz and so needs no multipliers to match the specification for network transport. The same is the case with the USB 're-clocker' which uses an oscillator with a native 24 MHz frequency. Both have a stability specification of 3 ppb. mutec-net.com/product_ref10_se120.php#data

I forgot to add that my better AfterDark clock is an Emperor Triple Crown when referring to the table above. I think it was the perfect price point versus performance. The Giesemanns are quite a step up in price (probably because the OCXO selection process yields so few).

Yes, the AfterDark units are certainly much better value for money. If you ever want to compare with the Mutec let me know though Martin. Eventually it will go to Germany (along with the EtherREGEN etc), but for now it is still in the UK. I will probably put an Innuos PhoenixUSB in the German system between the Fidata and DAC, but I only use the streamer rarely and so the Uptone route will be fine there - although I suspect that I could sell the Mutec/Uptone etc components and get at least one Innuos unit for the proceeds!

I bought an LHY OCK-1 external clock a couple of months ago.
Some on Head-Fi say it's performance/value ratio is very high. I liked the reviews, size, price, colour (black), no LPS required, and it paired well with the Audio GD DI-20HE ddc.
Sending it to Tony to see what he can to step things up a little.

Posted this on the Uptone EtherRegen section - I am using the After Dark Emperor Double Crown and LPS for my EtherRegen. Sounds great! But I also have to deal with a finicky dc power cable and have to reinsert occasionally. The upgraded Ghent Neotech 7N Copper 18AWG DC cables seem loose in the EtherRegen and LPS sockets.

My very first clock was a BG7TBL, and my first AD clock was a King. I now have an Emperor Triple Crown and am running both the ADs in the system.

Nice to see car audio power cable making a come back

That unit is just about one of the units I don't have, have had indifferent experinaces with his equipment over the years hence my non intrested. However if anyone wishes me to measure the unit and benchmark it happy to.

On the subject of clock cables, I've tried a whole bunch of co-ax cables from Belden, Canare and no-names. By far the best of them has been the LMR-400 which is well-shielded and ridiculously low-cost. It's 50 ohm which may seem a mismatch but it works fine with my sinewave clocks (75 ohm) and Gustard (50 ohm) kit.
My thinking is that good shielding and 50 ohm are the key to success in my system. The one superior cable that matches this spec, and is highly regarded in the Head-Fi forum, is the Harmonic Technologies Digital Copper III clock cable with crimped BNC connectors. It's single-crystal, triple-shielded and looks well-made. The cost is not exorbitant, about £85 for 1m (I only need 0.5m).
Has anyone here tried one? I may give it a punt.

I use 3 LMR-400 cables with the same excellent results.
Obtained mine from seller "Uwekom Store" on AliExpress and got 1 meter cables for £7.48 plus £2.02 for shipping. Other lengths are available as well.
The Harmonic Technologies Digital Copper III cables sound intriguing and certainly receive high marks for a bit more money.

Martin recent post on the X26 and the merits of each DAC and how a external clock changes the DAC So in Martin case helping with depth texture and detail using the X26 With the R26 it changes the DAC warmth into a more neutral tonality, the slight warmth is gone. But it also just makes the DAC better in every way I think the 26 range true potential is only heard when paired with an external clock It is a game changer for sure

Harmonic Technologies Digital Copper III clock cable with crimped BNC connectors I like a purchase challenge from time to time, but this one is proving very elusive. HT are a US based company and seem to be unique in using single crystal copper (not just OFC) in their manufacturing. However, I have trawled all the US suppliers and none seem to offer the Copper version while a few offer the Silver version. As for worldwide dealers, some listed don't appear to offer any HT products at all, and only two from Hong Kong offer the Copper. Worse still, none offer them in 0.5m length. I have contact both HK vendors and await a positive reply.

A chap on the Head-Fi forum is helping me to make contact with Audio Accessory HK. They have confirmed that they can supply 0.5m lengths.

THat HT cable is pretty much the same as three others, seeing as they are made in the same factory lol

They all make only 75 ohm or only phono cables, apart from HT.
I'm still pursuing Audio Accessory HK.
