This is my favourite version. For the vivid pictures painted by the writing and soaring vocal of Sandy Denny, and the amazing guitar in the righthand speaker of Richard Thompson (interestingly tuned guitar). When you get on in years, you can all too easily relate..

Brilliant track, from a great album. That's Sandy's mum and dad on the front cover.

For another superb Denny/Fairport track, look no further than She Moves Through The Fair. I can never get enough of this song. open.qobuz.com/track/4390309

Never heard this song before and it's stunning, if rather bleak ...
Thanks for the introduction.

Regarding Richard Thompson, I first heard his guitar work rather unwittingly on Al Stewart's Love Chronicles album.
Seeing beyond the cringey Al vocals etc, the guitar work is excellent. You can hear when Thompson's playing. Most of Fairport Convention were there under pseudonym. Thompson was Marvyn Prestwick🙂
Young Jimmy Page on the title track itself of course 🎸 (hey where's the Les Paul emoji?)
I was a wee boy when all this was going on 🙄 late to the party. Fortunately I had a rather hippy hot girlfriend, so we recreated much of the fun in our time, the early 80s! Even organised hippy 60s themed parties etc. I was never particularly interested in punk, new wave or modern romantic of the time 🤮

I'm a certified Al Stewart fan, and Al has always had superb musicians backing him, especially guitarists. Tim Renwick is my all-time favourite, but there's also Peter White, Laurence Juber, and the incredibly talented Dave Nachmanoff.

Richard Thompson's guitar work is excellent, but I really don't like his singing voice.

Brinsley Schwarz, Bruce Thomas, and Rick Wakeman were on that album too. I think my favourite Tim Renwick/Al Stewart album has to be "Modern Times" though, The Dark and the Rolling Sea in particular. The run of three albums, Past, Present, and Future (1973) - Modern Times (1975) - Year Of The Cat (1976), all with Tim, are probably my favourites from Al's canon.

Beautiful. Another good driving song. And thanks to this song I just discovered one called 'Matty Groves'. Very nice.
