Lalo Schifrin - Bullitt
WB 9362-48085-2
"Bullitt" the movie captivated me the first time I watched it, quickly becoming my favourite movie at the time, as time has gone by I find its not the movie that holds the magic for me but the soundtrack, Probably one of Lalo Schifrin's best scores, but its at this point its not the movie soundtrack version I think is fantastic it the more Jazz'd version that i find more entertaining. This is a go to album for me as a feel good hit, as it reminds me of the movie I love, picturing the action that goes with the music. The Album
"Bullitt" is a soundtrack album to the motion picture "Bullitt", by Argentine composer, pianist and conductor Lalo Schifrin, recorded in 1968 and released on the Warner Bros. label. The tracks released on the album are alternate versions of those heard in the film and were re-recorded at the film producers' insistence for a more "pop" oriented soundtrack.
The alternate version is linked to at the end, but my prefered version is the first one.
The Allmusic review states
"Everything on the album is visually evocative the way good soundtrack music should be, yet the individual cuts are tight and melodic enough to hold up to repeated listens. The end result is a soundtrack that succeeds both as a film score and a stand-alone album. This unique combination makes Bullitt one of the finest achievements in the Lalo Schifrin catalog and one of the best action film scores ever written"
Links Other Version (This version is included just for reference, voting on the first version please)
In 2000, the original movie arrangements were recreated by Schifrin in a recording session with the WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany. This later version of the soundtrack also includes reconstructions of the 1968 soundtrack album arrangements for some tracks. The 2000 recreation can be identified from its track listing by the inclusion of the "Bullitt, Guitar Solo" track, a piece that does not appear in the film but which is inspired by the main Bullitt theme.
Hope you enjoy

Overall I enjoyed this soundtrack very much. The production veered towards the, "I'm over here, he's over there" stereo mixing at times, but luckily it was not so apparent everywhere. "Music to Interrogate by" was my least favourite; in fact I nearly confessed! The recording was good overall and I especially liked the bass and the piano and the pacing of "Shifting Gears" was great and very evocative I thought, so much so that it is playing again at the moment!
As a soundtrack it is certainly worthy of a 5, but as an album I'll have to give it a 4 as I probably won't play it with any regularity.

Jazz and orchestra can be a mix I like. Overall this one is too middle of the road / easy listening for me although I do like bits. Probably giving away the age

Very much of its time and all the better for it.
Easy going, lounging, high rollin', whisky drinkin', super kitsch - the title theme is priceless, the rest 4/5 for the fun.

Nicely performed and recorded. Easy to listen to but better as a soundtrack. Music to Interrogate By strays into Bert Kaempfert territory.
An honest 3/5 and I'll leave it in my current circulation playlist.

Yeah. Have both. Prefer the later version.
Probably 3/5 for the earlier version

I've never got around to watching Bullitt amazingly , seen the San Fran car chase many a time though . This music is very 60's movies , which is great it takes me back to my childhood , I love music that brings on nostalgia . Played it twice and as Martin says better watching and listening , enjoyable , thanks for choosing , 3/5 .

2/5. Not convinced. There were parts that I thought were really great, but then it would veer into a cringe making easy listening groove. I played it three times but shan't be doing so again. Thanks for giving us the chance to give it a go though - always good to hear something new.

I like this. 'Room 26' for example is nice. 'Hotel Daniels' instanly transports me to some place.
I'm a fan of the Italian crimefunk band Calibro 35 that began by making movie theme music, and this seems like the kind of film/soundtrack that influenced their style.
So its interesting to hear the authentic sound from which their sound was born. Very cool baby.

4/ 5 Not something I'd race back to hear again, but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it, for the superb musicianship as much as the content itself. Bass and Guitar(s) were outstanding in many places. I see Carol Kaye was one of the bassists, and it was probably Mike Deasy playing on the main theme. Damn good film too.
