Not for me; I've got all their albums bar 'Let It Be' on vinyl (in varying condition from near mint to totally shagged) plus the mono CD box set. I know their music off by heart, having grown up with it, so rarely feel the need to play the records/CDs

I re-recorded all the LPs recently as they were on MP3 or AAC. Now on lossless, they sound as fresh as ever and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to them all again. I suppose because they are so ingrained, its tempting to think you won't get much from listening to them all again. However, like a favourite book they can be revisited again and again and still bring something new.
What is there about these mono sets that offers more than stereo Dave? I have a couple of them in original mono but prefer the stereo. How much difference has remastering made?

It has been said that the stereo version was a quick knock off after they had done the mono so not so good
I have heard that even remastered the mono is still best.
Knowing the mono versions well I found it strange and not better listening to a stereo CD, forget which one

Is this simply a vinyl version of this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles_in_MonoOr have they done new mono masters again? EDIT: Reading the opening paragraph of the wiki, yes it is, but new analogue masters. Interesting, but I'm happy with the 2009 edition.

That will be those 60 year old master tapes that degrade yearly will it ?
I must confess to considering this a capitalist con . Who owns the rights to Beatles songs these days ?

DQ
Are you ever happy or do you keep looking over your shoulder ?
No degradation, no con and Universal, but you could have looked that up instead of thread crapping ?

Dave , like you I am offering a opinion on the topic of the thread , it is an opinion that aint unique to me either . I also note you consider these to worth the money but have offered no explanation as to why I am happy ta for asking , but i confess to not understanding why unhappy people look over their shoulder .

£349 for something most people already own . Dont hold your breath . Not unless you have mint copies of all Beatles mono first pressings. Almost impossible and now very very expensive to buy. For a fraction of the cost of a first press Please Please Me you can have the entire mono recordings in better sound quality. EMI used tapes back then that have held up very well and if there is any top end loss it isn't even noticeable. These are probably the best and most important vinyl reissues ever. Done with a degree of care that I would never believe EMI could be assed to undertake.

However , if your evidence is some middle aged journalist for the likes of mojo etal , writing like a teenage girl who recently lost her virginity to the love of her life then alas I aint interested . P.S Are all the albums in mono ? My understanding is several beatles albums from around about the white album were concived and mixed as stereo recordings ?

Daniel you are replying to the wrong person. The set does not include the albums that only had Stereo mixes - Yellow Submarine (mono was a fold down from stereo), Abbey Road and Let It Be. However the Past Masters Lp includes all other tracks mixed to mono including those from Yellow Submarine intended for an unreleased EP as well as all non album mono singles. This excludes 'Ballad Of John an Yoko' which was released only in stereo (first UK stereo single). All covers replicate original 'flip back' sleeves and there is a superbly produced book.

DaveC - I have all the stereo LPs so I'll wait for the individual mono LPs to be released, but I will definitely buy one or two favourites. Are there any you would recommend especially from a 'different sound' point of view?

Well, they were all recorded probably in 4 track, each instrument a separate track to get the final mono mix right. As you would for mono and inappropriate for stereo.
I haven't been through them all, but the silence of the records is so good. The lack of compression is wonderful as is the dynamic rage too. I am using a Miyajima Zero mono cartridge on a second arm though.
Like you I was going to buy individual ones, then I thought why bother? get them all, the book and the T-shirt. As of today I am very glad I bought the box, it gets better and better !

Now I am beginning to understand the attraction. If somebody could guarantee a remastered early genesis without the obvious compression than 500 would be a bargain. However you can't put back what ain't there.
