As I understand the issues for your new amp to be 1) weight, 2) price, 3)sound quality, 4) age of equipment, perhaps a logical compromise is found in a new Purifi Class D amp from an outfit like Nord or Apollon?
The Purifi Class D approach is the only one I can come up with that meets all of your criteria.

I hope to be listening to the Purifi modules next week.

I hope to be listening to the Purifi modules next week. I know, Jules, that you can be counted on to share your listening experience here...

Julian I just noticed you mentioned a Neurochrome Modulus 686 on your list. I am pretty sure I heard a Neurochrome when I visited FireBottle(Steve on AoS), I was very impressed with it, he may have had a pair of 286. I looked into getting a 686 but the Krell came along just before I went ahead. Why not check out FireBottles opinion on them. there is a chap that makes and sells them on Ebay to a very high quality. Neurochrome Modulus 686 and pair ofNeurochrome Modulus 286

Yes the Neurochrome is actually already on my radar, Adrian - the chap who makes and sells them on eBay is the same dude who makes a wide range of Class A amps - just look at his other items.
I'm hoping I might get a chance to hear the 686 at Oliver's place (bigman80) when I can get myself up to his neck of the woods ...

Thanks for that! Ticks a lot of boxes for me apart from the 36kg weight. ChrisB do you know this amp at all?

I've heard one in several different systems, Jules. It was always quite impressive. Caveat emptor dealing with that vendor, though.

2x600W/4ohms, 2x1200W/2ohms. 47kg. Battleship. I had an FPB200 years ago. Absolute beast of an amp. The FBI is based on the FPB300. I’d love to own one someday.

Polar opposite to Krell's with as much power I presume that's a good thing?? You need to listen to one at home, very civilised and well mannered I find them vanilla ice cream but made with Madagascan vanilla pods. Its quality for a lot of folks.
I have a pair of the H33 radiators mono's as well. (way to Jazz cats for me) but quality none the less.
Repairs are quite fair as well

This is all way too confusing for me - I'll just buy a Supernait and live happily ever after ...

Good description. I really did enjoy the silky smooth, yet powerful composure of the ML383. Although I’ve used actives for years now, a dream system of mine is a pair of B&W 801D’s with a ML amp.
