Probably! Especially as many corporates are upgrading their cores to 40Gbps and throwing out their 10Gbps uplinks. We've just upgraded our core to completely 10Gbps. Different scale

A simple Ethernet to optical adapter, peanuts from eBay. Feed the router into that and the other end of the optical into the Cisco. If you can, power the adapter from an LPSU. Do it in baby steps until you get the link up and running.

Funny. I wasn’t ever going down this route.
But a number of trusted souls say it is an improvement.
Some have said with the Cisco 2960, it needs Cisco compatible products .

A newbie, so ‘hold my hand through this,’ questions.
Router to optical adapter via Ethernet. Optical out to 2960 switch.
Then use the Ethernet plugs on the switch as per usual?

Yep.
Since it's a Cisco switch, I highly recommend a Cisco SFP-10G-AOC5M (or whatever length you need) AOC cable for it.

From what I read, the Cisco needs compatible modules. See above, Brett, I added a recommended cable which keeps things simple.

Good spot - I hadn't seen that as we use Aruba switches at work.

Isn't this is all behind a router and some sort of firewall ?

Isn't this is all behind a router and some sort of firewall ? Well... yes. But a router's firewall is a very basic, almost archaic thing with little resistance to modern attacks*. However, you can help a great deal by keeping the router's firmware fully up to date, as I do my TP-Link MR-6400. Your only real protection is that you are likely a poor target so only the script kiddies will have a go. * compare with our Sonicwall at work, which handles a couple of thousand simultaneous connections and bats away an attack almost once per second. At £5k to purchase and with the same again in annual subscriptions, so it should.

Bugger. I use a 2960 too.

Here's my question - and at this stage it's purely hypothetical - if I buy a new 8-port switch, would it be worth my while buying one with SFP slots?

When did anyone believe me when I said something was hypothetical? I've just picked up a Netgear ProSafe GS110TP v2 for forty-five quid on eBay.

The answer is 'yes', so go ahead and buy one

Thanks for the advice, Martin. I've no immediate plans to switch over to fibre optic cable, but thought if would be a decent idea ...just in case.

I've no immediate plans to switch over to fibre optic cable, but thought if would be a decent idea ...just in case. It's a very good idea and an ethernet/fibre adapter at the other end, plus a cable, won't cost you very much when you're ready for it.

Still haven't quite got my head round this having read the thread again.
My current streaming set up has a Sky router in the hallway that has a long ethernet cable to the living room - I use this cable to feed my Ultrarendu when streaming or else my son has it for gaming.
My question is how do I integrate a fibre optic link in this set up? Exactly which components should go where and what is currently recommended to buy at reasonable prices? I would like to keep things as simple and streamlined as possible. The fewer boxes the better as my rack is getting crowded.
