I find myself compelled to write this due to the high levels of stress I find myself having to cope with at the moment.
There is no good news. The energy crisis, inflation, the ineptitude of politicians, global warming,, brexit, war in Ukraine, human and animal misery. Where is it all going to end up ? I can't cope with this level of worry for a long period of time. I read a twitter post from a hospital doctor saying suicide is on the rise. I'm not bloody surprised . Thus so called Government is supposed to look after the people but to me it seems they don't care and are actually laughing at us. When I say us I mean the working class plebs that make up the majority of the people in this country.
I have never been this worried and scared about things which are out of my control.

My way of dealing with it is mostly by ignoring it and focussing on the things that give me pleasure. Your list, Stu, is enough to get anyone worked up and, for the most part, we don't have the means to control it. So focus on what you can control and do things that make you happy.
It's going to be different for each person but I get home fairly tired from work and sit with Ruth to chat about our respective days over a coffee. I will then allocate myself at least two hours of music, which is the most powerful 'fix' I know. I'll then catch up with forums, or watch some drama, and enjoy a good SF novel before I fall asleep. In the weekends we fill our time with seeing friends or I'll go to a car meet to catch up with a whole different group of friends.
I try and fill all my spare time with doing things that please me. No miserable politician is going to take that away from me and I'll give them exactly the same time as they spend being concerned for me. F*ck all.
That's the way I intend to continue enjoying life.

You are not alone in your concerns for our future.
We need to correctly assess what brought us here and what we must do to correct course.

Agreed things we are told look grim
Worrying about what *might* happen is bad for you
Life may be uncomfortable for us this winter but possibly not
There are great people everywhere. They don't get the publicity the wasters get
Bad news sells newspapers - and all sorts of media
I used to watch Aljazeera for the headlines a few times a day, especially to see what trump had done. No more
There are always wars somewhere, always riots, always nastiness.
The good stuff is hidden. It's there.
I've recently had to readjust my approach to the family as they seem utterly out of step with what is going on. Will take time but I'll continue working on them
It is a natural human condition to follow the grim stuff, to try to find a solution We need to step back

Yup, worrying about what might happen isn't going to stop it from happening. I'm a natural worrier too but sometimes I've got to pull myself back to the here and now, otherwise I can make myself unwell.
Hopefully this horrible uncaring government won't be with us for much longer. TBH I honestly think they will be forced to take action before people take to the streets.

Good thread, by the way, Stu. I think it's worth thinking about and discussing the ways in which we cope with the world. Humour can go a long way, but otherwise surround yourself with good things.
If I sound dismissive about the negative things, it's because that's my way of dealing with. I treat with utter contempt the people who try to bring misery into my life - be they work 'colleagues' or politicians or other scumbags. Once I've done that, I dismiss them as the low lifes they are. A little anger and they're gone from my thoughts. It works wonders for my wellbeing.

Agree about humour. I would also suggest an excellent mental practice is every day to find something you can appreciate. I know it sounds a bit naff, but it can work. Of course, music helps. Like Martin, I avoid negative people. I find some people like psychic vampires sucking up positive energy and are best avoided.

I did manage to block out most of the misery of life a little while back but it has crept back in. I had to stop listening to the news but I get most of my news from the forums and it is mostly bad.
Music is great for sorting me out. I also need to throw myself back in to the diy home improvements. Need to finish off renovating my garage and other out buildings. That's what I'm gonna do today, with the radio on of course. I have a house extension to build and endless jobs around the house. Been in limbo for 10 years due to hs2 and thinking that we would move. Now the line past my house has been scrapped we are definitely staying but 10 years of doing little work on the house has caught up with me. Good job I am fairly handy af such things as I couldn't afford to pay for tradesmen.
See the negativity creeping in there, I can't help myself. Doing the work will make me happy though when I look at what I have achieved.
