Anna von Hausswolff is Swedish, the daughter of sound artist Carl Michael von Hausswolff. She is almost unique in stating her preferred instrument as church organ and preferred venue for concerts as churches and similar large spaces. She writes her own music, sings and plays some other instruments, too. Her gothic soundworld is different, incorporating the reverb of large acoustic spaces into the music to create a unique atmosphere. She is still quite experimental and I admit to liking her earlier two albums Ceremony and The Miraculous the most. Her voice is a gift, at once emotionally communicative yet powerful when she needs it to be. Most of her songs are in English. Here are some powerful examples of her best performances: Mountains Crave from the Ceremony album open.qobuz.com/track/43089379Stranger from The Miraculous album open.qobuz.com/track/43088995Funeral for my Future Children from the Ceremony album open.qobuz.com/track/43089388Finally, a glitzy performance of Courage for the Nobel Prize Awards

She is someone I really need to be in the mood to listen to, and even then I prefer her more classically inclined and/or "ambient" songs - as illustrated below - to her playing with a band.. I even quite like her singing while accompanying herself on organ, but somehow, adding anything else (except perhaps a drum machine) seems to mar the beauty for me.
But, the stuff of hers I really do like I'd happily file amongst such august company as Max Richter, and Steve Reich, or maybe Ólafur Arnalds, or even Brian Eno.
This is something of hers that I already had bookmarked, and I had to listen to it again (and watch it, obviously) ...three times in a row.

I think that performance of Stranger above is deeply affecting. What communicative power.

I think that performance of Stranger above is deeply affecting. What communicative power. This is probably going to sound fairly daft, but I think it's her " songs" that do nothing for me, whereas with a single instrument, the church organ, she creates soundscapes that are emotionally far beyond a simple song.

That's fair comment, we each listen for different things.
I also like her big soundscapes, which are more like listening to Tangerine Dream in feel.
