I been a fan since first hearing the first album at Shades Record Store. To be honest I thought they were going to be another I loved that no one else gets. The band Influences include Rush, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Pink Floyd, Queen and YES. They initially formed in Berkley music school, but left to pursue a music career. Initially they were called Majesty Here are them playing Fortune In Lies which makes it to the first album It shows the energy and chops of the band well. But a bit cringe watching it.
To be continued

The First album I still remember hearing When Dream and Day Unite I was blown away by the sheer energy and bombastic nature to it all. I saw it like a mix of Metallica meets Rush. I was a fan straight away. Afterwards they take two years to release a new album. This is mostly due to the difficulties of finding a record company prepared to promote them and finding a suitable vocalist The stand out tracks are A Fortune in Lies Ytse Jam and The Killing Hand

It took a few years for Dream Theater to get a record deal. Most record companies would not touch them. You have to remember that at this point the charts were full of bands Like Guns N Roses and the grunge scene was in full blast. Sophisticated metal like Dream Theater was considered not profitable. However the band believed in what they were doing and developed their song writing. A former music journalist called Derek Oliver (he used to write in sounds and Kerrang) got a job as a A&R man and helped the band get a deal. The band still did not have a vocalist however and then received a demo from James LaBrie who was a DJ at the time. The band then recorded Images and Words. The company were willing to invest in the video Pull Me Under which got plenty of MTV time.
My favourite track from the album is Take The Time which became a personal anthem for my buddies and me.
The band did 2 nights at the Marquee the second night was recorded live. (I went to both concerts)
They also played in Japan from which a live video was released Looking back it is important to remember just how unfashionable this music was and whilst other bands like Cynic and Wathchtower were doing similar they were even more obscure and harder to get into.

The next 3 albums are not in my favourites albums by Dream Theater I guess I was hoping more for Images and Words mk 2 rather than albums in their own rights Listening again to Awake I feel like I been a bit harsh on the band I enjoy tracks like The Mirror Voices and Caught In the Web
A change of Seasons follows next. Basically one track with a few tracks showing the band influences
Falling into Infinity is probably the most commercial album due to pressure from the record label. However there are some good songs on this such Lines In the Sand and Peruvian Skies

After Falling Into Infinity the band became determined to do it their own way. The next album would literally be make or break. The band took its influences from Operation Mindcrime and other epic conceptual albums that was based on a song from Images and Words called Metropolis Part 1 This lead them writing a whole album around a past live experience. Thankfully for the band the gamble paid off. Listen to the release Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory by Dream Theater on Qobuz open.qobuz.com/album/0075596244862This is followed by Live scenes from New York (they also did this at Hammersmith)

Next up is Six degrees of inner Turbulence Basically two albums released on one CD the second part dealing with mental health issues and shares stories of people's mental health issues throughout the CD. As a concept album I prefer to the previous album as more based on real struggles rather than fantasy. The second part off the Cd starts from Overture

Growing up I had a large wide aspect ratio poster of Dream Theater right above my bed. It was a wide shot of them in the studio recording. flic.kr/p/2okr5PXI still listen to this track a few times per year it just sounds so amazing as it opens.
