I've been reading a bit about ghosts/hauntings recently, and was wondering of anyone here has ever had a ghostly/supernatural experience? The only remotely 'spooky' experience I've had was when I was about eight or so, and was an auditory phenomenon - a voice 'out of nowhere' heard by myself and my two older sisters one evening. My parents were out of the house, and my younger brother was alseep upstairs and didn't hear anything.

There have been times when I thought something just a bit weird was going on 90% of the time it's rational. 10% of the time it's probably rational, you just didn't think about it or know enough As the system upgrades further every now and again I think "What is that ?!" (odd type noise, which surely cannot be coming from t'system) Play it again and there it is

When i were a lad...a long long time ago..... I was clearing out some stuff from my room. I had the top (attic) room in a large Victorian house. Once I had my arms full of stuff, I couldn't reach the light switch - it had got dark as I tidied up.
So I started down the stairs and as I reached the first landing, I felt a definite tug on my shoulder. I scooted along the landing pretty quick and, as I turned to go down the next flight, the damn thing tugged again. Same again the next flight and landing. To say I ran down the last flight would be close to but not exactly the truth. Flew is nearer the mark.
Dropped everything and grabbed the light switch.
A ball of string had snagged up at the top of the house and was resting over my shoulder as I went downstairs.
That is the nearest I have ever got to experiencing or indeed, believing that ghosts are possible. That sort of stuff is as far as it gets from my mindset.

Nope. No ghost/supernatural goings on here. Maybe some people are more 'susceptible' than others.

+1. And if I did, I would assume I was under a misapprehension. David Hume dealt with this issue in the context of miracles. From Wikipedia: "Hume's main argument concerning miracles is that miracles by definition are singular events that differ from the established Laws of Nature. The Laws of Nature are codified as a result of past experiences. Therefore a miracle is a violation of all prior experience and thus incapable on this basis of reasonable belief. However, the probability that something has occurred in contradiction of all past experience should always be judged to be less than the probability that either my senses have deceived me or the person recounting the miraculous occurrence is lying or mistaken, all of which I have past experience of."

I had a weird encounter when living in my parents pub in Northampton, didn't realise exactly how weird until I researched the history of the building. No alcohol involved in this btw, I'd just finished work...

I've not had any ghostly experiences however I can regale you with a funny "ghost" story from a pal who was working in Edinburghs old town refitting a restaurant. Big,strong lad feared of nowt. Grafting away in this cellar with another bloke and they keep hearing these groaning and moaning noises but couldn't place them at all. Anyway it shat them up a wee bit and they really didn't like it so after lunch they refused to go back to said cellar area. The boss takes it quite seriously as these were big lads who as mentioned weren't afraid of anything,so off he goes to the cellar to find out what's going on. Right enough he hears the same noises but being older and having lived in Edinburgh a bit longer knows what it is.
It was a knocking shop tucked away quietly next door!!
Worth digging about for Tom Slemen books on ghosts as well.

I had a moment last night listening to Country Joe, Feel like I'm fixin' to die.
Setting up an LP so quite close to the speakers
There is one track where he starts in a whisper - that was *real* certainly from someone in the room

+1 Not a single experience. My gf had one, she believes, I believe her, but have never experienced a single thing. I did read of an interesting study conducted by a group of scientists who set out to examine how fear of an unknown entity influences peoples perceptions of situations. This group of scientists while working at a lab on other projects that were actually funded, on their lunch breaks, over the course of a year, decided to create a ghost from scratch. They gave it a name, Dave I think, they gave it a backstory, and they worked out how and when Dave died and how he came to haunt their facility. Over time they began to believe, while observing themselves, that they were experiencing signs of Dave's presence. They did begin to experience spooky things, they thought, and did feel some fear. At that point all hell broke loose and they could see lights flickering and going out and coming back on and other strange happenings that might send someone running. They felt this experiment was some evidence that a persons own fear of a ghost in their house could actually generate occurrences that otherwise would not have occurred if that persons fear was not present to twist their own perceptions of what is actually happening.

I believe Ghosts are all in you head, i come to this conclusion out of a an experience or ten when i was a kid.
My nan used to stay with us when i was young. At the bottom of the stairs you had to walk across to get from the Kitchen into the dining room into the living room. Late at night she used to religiously put her night robe on & make a cup of tea go into the living room. Out of the blue one New Years eve she told us she wanted to go home! The morning after i went up to visit her like i did a lot to find her dead in the chair, died in her sleep, a horrible thing for a 10 year old to witness.
Thought Number 1: This maybe proof that you could know you are dying when you time is up.
However After this the odd time i us to wake up during the night to go down stairs for a wee to see what realistically looked like Nan walk across the bottom of the stairs with her Night gown on. This would be deemed a ghost of her but it was clearly my mind playing tricks.. This went on till i left home.

Not personally but the wife did, and so did one of my cousins. I had, and have, no reason to disbelieve either of them.
I think there have been way too many reports throughout the ages not to give some creedence to the idea of ghosts, for want of a better word, existing.

My long deceased grandma has a habit of hiding keys in strange places such as under the duvet or on top of the wardrobe (honestly, we're not just using that as an excuse), and occasionally things will spontaneously move or fall over even when someone's watching, and we put that down to her too. She always did like a good joke.

I was too young to have anything more than vague memories, but I did see a ghost repeatedly when I was a toddler. We lived in a new build home and I slept in a cot in my parents room.
I started seeing a figure come through the wall and head for my side of the room. He was crying out "George!" repeatedly. This happened every night until my parents went to the local church and the vicar did a cleansing.
The vicar did some research and found out that our house was built on an old track. A guy was murdered by robbers on the very spot a long time ago. He was out searching for his missing brother, who was called George.
I haven't seen or heard anything since, but I do believe and I also think small children are more likely to be able to see and hear spirits because they are more open to experiences.

When my wife died in 1999, she was far too young and angry at the cancer that had consumed her. The week before her funeral was fraught with unsettled thoughts, all in my mind of course, looking back. I did think that I would see a ghost after that, but it never happened. I an not one to scare easily and logic tells me that ghosts don't exist. I was open to seeing one but now know it's all about state of mind.

I used to watch 'Most Haunted' on TV and some of the 'goings on' were extremely hard to explain rationally. However the credence of the programme vanished quickly when I read that their chief medium was apparently faking it and was promptly shown the door...

Exactly. These programmes rely on people's gullibility and desire to be thrilled.
