Talk Talk Spirit of Eden What happens when you release a album that is about 10 years ahead of it's time. Well in the case of Spirit of Eden it does a epic fall, however this should not be a reason to go back in time and perhaps see it from a different light. Talk Talk were part of that synth pop, catchy melodies with keyboards was the order of the day. This is nothing like that. Its has lots of Jazz elements combined with Rock, it is hard to find a melody to hook into, at times almost avant-garde the way it pulls you out from the melody. Easy listening it is not, it is basically the Father of a more modern post rock sound bands like Radiohead would find success with. The music is dark and brooding and never lets you off the hook. Yet within all that if you give it time there is beauty, a sense of band putting everything in to the record.

It is not a easy album to get on with Chris I find that I have to be in a certain mood to enjoy

I know The Colour of Spring, the album that came before this one, much better and really like it. I've pretty much forgotten this one so it'll be interesting to play it.

I bought The Colour of Spring when it was released and never tire of it , Spirit of Eden is nowhere near as accessible but there are many who rate it very highly and I know two people who say it is their favourite album of all time . Personally it's ok , I have to be in the mood for it , it's slow a bit drawn out and maybe a bit too clever for me as I do love a good pop tune . 3/5

A good choice of album this one, I have listened to it before and liked it then as I did on this morning re-listen. In parts it reminds me of aspects of Brand X, but it is more than that. Not an easy listen, or should I say casual listen, but a rather good and rewarding one IMO if you take time to focus on it.
So a 4/5 from

How do I say that an album reminds me of both Steppenwolf and Clannad in different places, without the whole thing losing cohrence? Well, I suppose I just did. Nina Simone also came into my head while listening to the "Wealth". Some of the tracks I felt, were a bit aimless, sounding like very long intros to songs that failed to materialise. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoyed what I heard, and wished I'd saved it for a late-night listen, because that's when I feel it would really come into its own. Semi-ambient. Is that even a thing? Tis now. Allowing for a late-night atmosphere, a definite 4/ 5. I am in some nice woods.

I have tried so hard, so many times to get along with this album. I promise to try again! Well, I tried! Actually I do quite like it. Originally, I found it a bit slow (not in tempo, but mood) and it didn't really do much to keep me engaged. After a few plays, the subtleties began to make their presence felt. If scoring were out of ten, I'd give it a 7, but I guess I'll round up in this case to a 4/5. Thanks John.

I've finally found the time to listen to this properly on Qobuz in 24/96 resolution.
The vocal is highly recognisable from The Colour of Spring but the mood is much more introspective. It's a good listen and there is a lot going on, especially on percussion which is usually the first thing I notice with Talk Talk. Every song is long and a slow burner. Probably my favourite would be I Believe In You.
Im giving it 3/5 not because I don't like it but because I doubt I'll play it very often.

To be absolutely honest I think the band were taking the right royal pee with this album. They were signed to EMI and due to the huge commercial success of the previous album, were given an 'open budget' to record this. So they spent a *year* recording an album they knew wouldn't sell much. Almost a 'fk u' to the record industry - some people might see that as wildly heroic but companies like EMI need to shift units - you know what you're signing up for. They should have recorded it using their own money on a farm in the Outer Hebrides, with an independent record label - now that I could respect. I couldn't make it through to the end but think the story of this album is far more interesting than the music and is now firmly ensconced in rock folklore. "The sessions took place in a blacked-out studio, with an oil projector and strobe lighting. Engineer Phill Brown said that the album, along with its successor, was "recorded by chance, accident, and hours of trying every possible overdub idea." According to Brown, "twelve hours a day in the dark listening to the same six songs for eight months became pretty intense. There was very little communication with musicians who came in to play. They were led to a studio in darkness and a track would be played down the headphones." 2* for the interest value - now pass the bong. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_of_Eden

Mood dependant is right.
Kind of liked on first listen. Didn't on second. Just listened again, and love it.
