Ugly Beautiful was released in 1996 and is Babybird's sixth album, but their first for Echo Records. The album includes the singles "Goodnight", "Candy Girl", "You're Gorgeous" and "Cornershop," one, some, or all of which you may have heard before. " You're Gorgeous" was, in fact, a surprise top-three UK and an international hit for them. The album was written entirely by bandleader Stephen Jones. Many of the songs were written and recorded by Jones alone between 1988 and 1994. Several of the songs had been released in these demo incarnations on Jones' solo lo-fi work as Baby Bird that he did prior to forming the band with John Pedder, Robert Gregory, Luke Scott and Huw Chadbourn. The majority of the album was produced by Jones with Steve Power. Darren Allison and Ian Caple each produced a song. Ugly Beautiful received generally positive reviews when it was released. I can't remember how I first heard it, I don't even remember when (or why) I bought it, but it's one of those select few albums I return to time and time again. If I do actually have a pronounced " favourite" sort of music, this definitely isn't it. I probably haven't got anything similar in my collection (unless you count my other two Babybird albums, but even those are much more " blissed out a la Madchester/Oasis/Mondays/Roses" in places. I really can't explain why I love this album so much, or even what it is I love about it, but love it I do. I hope it brings some pleasure into your lives too.

It's quite nice. 'Goodnight' would fit in perfectly on the round the clock playlist played on FM station 92.5 The River, a large collection of different atmospheric tunes, many that nearly bring a tear to my eye.
'You're Gorgeous' and 'You & Me' also.
On another album 'If You'll Be Mine' is the best I've heard from this group so far.

So that's who created "You're Gorgeous", I never knew.
This is a nice set of pleasant tunes with quite a few hooks. I have nothing like it among my likes, either. Pretty (but definitely not Priti) so gets 4/5 from me.

I have had this album in my collection for quite a long time now, If I remember correctly I sent the song "You're Gorgeous" to a girl I was trying to date, and you know what it worked, we dated for about 6 months... then I was dumped haha.
Its just a nice easy listen, and now for me brings back some good memorys, ( which at the moment helps me with my metal health. )
So for me i think i will have to give it 5/5, its got an extra one for the sentiental side.

Instantly I found myself thinking this really reminds me of another artist, but who? After a few tracks it came to me, the overall vocal tone is very similar to Richard Hawley(a great artist), and the songs and mix are quite reminiscent of Mr. Hawley in his more lighter moments, there is also aspects of a Nick Cave feel.
It is quite a quirky album, and I think it could become a regular player, I need to give it a few more plays, but at the moment its a 4/5.

I suspect I might be voting alongside Barry here. I gave it 3. It was OK, but I found it rather bland and unremarkable. Now people mention it reminds them of Richard Hawley, I'm rather afraid of playing it again.

I have just noticed that I never voted / commented on this album. It is certainly a Sunday morning / housework listen type of album with some super singles on it and a few tracks that one might be tempted to skip (eg "Jesus is my Girlfriend"). I enjoyed it and it gets a 4 from me, but I suspect that Toploader and Squeeze will dominate the dusting. If I could ever be bothered to produce playlists then a few tracks would certainly make then in there.
