A cheeky 5th instalment for Classical Album Choice.
I've just come across this album, and wanted to share.
I'm not usually a great fan of solo viola. I kind of think I should like it, but when it comes to it I usually just get bored.
But not with this lovely young lady playing. She plays with passion, energy and precision. She's chosen some very interesting repertoire, as well. Rozsa, Penderecki, Stravinsky, Khachaturian and others.
Anyway, have a listen and see if you enjoy it as much as I do.

2/5 for me, which will probably come as no surprise, unless you're surprised I didn't give it a "1" instead of a "2". I took notes again:
Personal opinions all, and as per usual I'm certainly not expecting anyone to agree.

Haha, wow. Maybe one day suddenly it'll make sense. Personally, I just love the vibe of this album.

I'm trying but I find the viola not to my liking as a solo instrument.
The Kachaturians are probably the best, but I wouldn't listen to any of this again. 2/5

Maybe try it with and then without Shungite?

Well I enjoyed it - 4/5.
I don't really get the 'anti viola' thing one reads about so often - for me it's just another one of the string family with a different register. Will sound as good as the music written for it and performer.
Indeed my only criticism of this recording is that the performer just sounds a tad inhibited - I often wanted her to lose herself in the music more; go harder & deeper, to really make it catch fire. Makes such a difference when she manages to do just that in parts of the Bodorova for instance.

No, I don't get the anti viola thing either. "Viola jokes" have been standard fare for decades, though.
Vaughan Williams wrote exquisitely for viola. If it's good enough for Ralph it's good enough for anyone.
I'm glad you enjoyed the album, Jules.

For me, it's not anti viola in particular, I don't much like the cello as a solo instrument either.
I make an exception for the Dvorak concerto.

Has anyone transcribed The Four Seasons for viola soloist? It seems an obvious thing for someone to have a go at, but nothing pops up from a fairly simplistic Spotify search.
