Khruangbin - Con Todo El MundoKhruangbin are a Houston, Texas, band who formed in the early 2010s. I haven't been listening to them for very long but they have made quite an impact on me with a style of music that is unique and difficult to compare with anyone else. Khruangbin is Thai for 'aeroplane' and certainly their early influences were Thai rock and funk. Their music is highly rhythmic and beat driven, a kind of trancy journey with a thoroughly infectious groove. They are a three-piece with DJ on drums, Mark Speer on a combination of lead and rhythm guitar duties and Laura Lee playing the bass. The drummer has incredible timing, providing metronomic beats onto which the other performers lay out their lines. In fact, this is how they create their songs, starting with the drums, then bass, then Speer 'colours in' with alternating rhythm and leads. His guitar style is fascinating, adding a unique sound to the band. Lee's bass lines are nice and playing this music so that you can feel the bass really helps. I hope you enjoy it, it's something different that maybe not many of you have sampled before. open.qobuz.com/album/t3fa6pcr3lhga

Gorgeous. The track Maria Tambien is beautiful. The production is nice and dirty and the songs themselves are right up one of my alleys.

Three from me. Track one was a bit " Shadows-lite," as if Hank had gone walkabout for that track. Track two was Santana without Carlos, track three was Los Lobos sin David Hidalgo... and so on. It eventually clicked with me that the way I was hearing this album was as what sounded like a collection of backing tracks, with just enough of a melody to get in the way of an actual, proper, full-blown, tune. It's purely a personal thing I'm sure, maybe musicians listen to/hear things differently, especially as in this instance I'm a guitarist listening to what is, at its heart, a guitar-led album. Don't worry, I'm not expecting anyone to agree with me. All of that aside, the playing is excellent, and trhe chilled Tex-Mex vibe was nice, as background music.

I've listened to this a couple of times, and I've been trying to figure out why it leaves me thinking of the word Empty. Then Paul comes along with his guitar-led insight, and that makes a lot of sense to me. Yes it's backing tracks without a centre focus. An overharsh 1/5 from me, as it could have been so much more. I scored it a couple of days back but without posting a comment as I didn't really understand why it left me feeling unsatisfied, even irritated. Now I know!
Edit : I guess, being mainly a classical bod, it's a bit like listening to a concerto, but with the lead soloist doing a no show.... Or, even more aptly, like a clarinet quintet without a clarinet. All the backing music is there, but there's no point if the main musician isn't also there. It's karaoke! Maybe we're supposed to do our own thing and play or sing along.

An excellent choice IMO, very enjoyable, whilst quite laid back there are some lovely guitar lines and interplay between the drums, bass and guitar. A verystron 4/5 from me. If you like this and have not heard them the I would recommend you give these a go as well.

I did quite enjoy this but, as others have noted, it makes for great background music. As it happens, I've been using background music quite extensively of late, while working and this fits the bill really well. In that context, I've given it a 3/5, because it's not something I would normally select to listen to, as opposed to hearing it, if that makes sense.

How could I resist listening to a group called The Bambi Molesters?

Well this is interesting , possibly the best background music I've heard , maybe a bit more to it , listened twice and an easy 4/5...so far . Well I went backwards with this and gave it 3/5 , quirky at first but got a bit bored with it on the fourth listen .

Khruangbin - Con Todo El Mundo is an interesting listen. Cannot dispute the groove.
I lived in Houston, Texas for a couple of years in the early nineties... great food with world class humidity.
Throughout my listen I somehow developed a powerful hankering for tacos. Go figure.
