Christopher Ball. I'd never heard of the guy. I just came across this piece while plunging down a Spotify rabbit hole, as one does. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_BallBorn 1936 in Leeds. Conductor, clarinettist, composer. Seems very well embedded in the British classical music establishment. He wrote this work for one of the 2Cellos guys, Stjepan Hauser, who is the soloist here, so MikeMusic might be interested as well as the usual suspects here. Nothing ground breaking or likely to displace RVW or Elgar from their eminence. Just melodic, nicely orchestrated, accessible. I enjoyed it, you might, too. The smaller companion pieces on the album are nice, as well. Listen to the release Christopher Ball: Music for Cello by Stjepan Hauser & Christopher Ball on Qobuz open.qobuz.com/album/0851950001421

Thanks Jerry! Unfortunately I'm familiar with 2Cellos but Christopher Ball is entirely new to me ...

It started off a bit Nymanesque, followed by some nice, pastoral flute a la Vaughan Williams. A quick stab of Jerome Moross was followed by a dash into, and out of Bach for a quickie, a soupcon of a Chopin etude, then Aaron Copeland, back into Vaughan Wiliams, and a nicely cinematic crescendo to finish with. And that was only the first movement. A very nice CD Jerry. No big thing, but I thought the very last track wandered off into a bit of a cul-de-sac. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed it, as you probably knew I would. I would probably have knocked a half-point off for the last track, but as I can't, I won't. 5/ 5

Vaughan Williams was evoked mostly for me, with some almost Lark Ascending moments.
Very easy to listen to and none the worst for that.
2Cellos nowhere to be heard, thank goodness! 4/5

If you fancy more of something in the same vein, this Cor Anglais Concerto is entertaining.

Nothing ground breaking or likely to displace RVW or Elgar from their eminence. Just melodic, nicely orchestrated, accessible. I think that sums it up well for me. It's a pleasant enough pastoral RVW 2.0 with some attractive themes. Needs a better soloist though - the performance is rather superficial and limp in parts. Thought the orchestra could do with some more heft, shaping & direction too.
