Every now and again a particular album sounds 'real', like being there I feel an achievement when I play certain Jeff Beck albums now. His guitar has the authentic attack and bite of a real electric guitar listened to at close quarters. I've heard enough of my son playing his to know it.

Every step in the recording chain, from instrument and amplifier construction, to microphone specifics, to the mastering desk itself, has some role to play in the final offering to the end user. A good engineer and producer can "play" their studio like an extra instrument, although sometimes this can be the detriment of the sound, especially if they have even bigger egos than the performers. What you make of it, and how you listen to their finished idea of what you should hear is, eventually, down to personal choice and/or the extent of one's funds. One cannot, however, polish a turd. GIGO. That would be my summary of the article.
