A bit of background is needed here because the album name is a trifle confusing . Jason Molina (1973 -2013 ) was an American singer songwriter , apart from two solo albums 2004/2006 his output was with bands Songs:Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. Songs:Ohia consisted of Jason and various changing musicians who released seven albums 1997-2003 Magnolia Electric Co. from what I can gather was a consistent line up , five albums 2005-2009 . Now comes the confusing bit , this album being the seventh from Songs:Ohia is called Magnolia Electric Co. Jason insinuates that this is his new venture and later states that "Didn't it Rain" (6th) was in fact the last of Songs:Ohia's output even though Magnolia Electric Co. is listed as Songs:Ohia record . Got all that So here we have it : Spotify deluxe edition first 8 tracks are the original .

I think I can go for this. A flavour of Neil Young which can only be good
Need another listen or two to vote
Peoria Lunch Box Blues with female vocal may be skipped

I enjoyed that, Barry. Thanks. 4/5 from me. The looseness reminded me of The Band in places, and although it was really nothing like it, the first track put me in mind of them covering Dylan's "Forever Young".

A 5 from me and I enjoyed this immensely and will certainly be exploring more of his / their work. I agree with the 'review' on Qobuz about the two tracks with 'guest' singers. "The Old Black Hen" is a bit monotone in comparison to the other tracks and "Peoria Lunch Box Blues" took a while to settle on the ear I found. Great album though despite a bit of weird imaging / fading on the opening track.

Sorry I haven't put much time into listening to this. I've not had much time with the system in the last week.
An interesting slice of Americana. Initially it sounds a lot older than the 2003 date given. I think it's the style of the music and I rather like the introspection rather than the bombast referred to in the Qobuz review. I liked Scout's lazy voice, too.
Paul referred to 'looseness' and I agree that covers it. 4/5 from me, too.

I've played this three times now and will be doing so again, so thanks a lot for bringing it to our attention, Barry. It's a great album. 4/5 from me. There's a definite Neil Young influence going on here and it led me to trying some of the other work in the back catalogue. I haven't found anything I don't like yet. Good stuff!

Just finished listening to this and some of the tracks I liked a great deal, very much in the Neil young mould, a good 4/5 from me, and I will probably investigate more of his music. Thanks

Liked it the first time and thought it would grow on me Pretty good. Doesn't quite make it. Music is good. Vocal is less strong and gets in the way. Female vocal on Peoria Lunch box blues is not for me at all
Well worth a listen
