Hi Chaps, After a long time waiting for my plinth I was able to put my record deck together.
The cartridge is a new Denon DL-103R that I had, the SUT is the Auditorium A23 made specifically for the DL-103. The split weight 3009 that I found in Hampshire, was in mint condition with all the paper work, box and manuals. Then I had it shipped to Edinburgh for rewiring and installation of RCA jacks, came with an additional S3 headshell and a weight plate. After a few listening sessions I was not satisfied with the sound, only classical music was used for the test, the missus did not like it at all. I had a chat with Angus [Phonomac] a chap with whom I forged a nice friendship during the years, he rebuilt my AT ATP-12T tonearm. Angus is not a fan of SME arms, especially the early ones which lacked precision in his view, I had a very hard time setting up mine.
He recommends the Audio Technica AT-1010 tonearms that he highly modifies with superior parts and different bearings. He makes two versions – one with a conventional detachable headshell and one which eliminates the flexible mechanical connection at the headshell. These arms are quite expensive due to the work and materials involved.
Several people visited Angus for listening sessions and were highly impressed with the AT-1010, looks like a solid and well designed tonearm and I may dump the SME. Cheers, Horacio

Hi Horacio
I remember well during the heyday of Tottenham Court Road hi-fi shops how the SME was highly rated and sold for a premium over the Acos Lustre, a predecessor to the 1010 made by Audio Technica. I saved my pennies and bought an SME detachable. It was OK for the time and looked gorgeous.
If I had known then what I know now, I would have bought select Japanese kit and bypassed the entire Linn/Naim/Roksan era altogether. I did manage to avoid most of it. The SME was moved on but not before I took another wrong turn and bought an SME III.

I think that a Denon 103R is entirely the wrong cartridge to put in a SME 3009 type arm. The arm bearings aren't rigid, and nor as a knife edge design are they intended to be. The 103 will be putting copious amounts of energy through the arm, it's what they do and is why a rigid arm is a necessity imo. The 3009 arm will be rattling away and doing untold damage to the signal. Which is why it sounds naff.
Either the arm or the cartridge needs to be changed. Personally I'd keep the 103, I'm a big fan of them. If the Phonomac arm is beyond the amount you'd prefer to spend, there are plenty of alternatives which would allow the Denon 103 cartridge and your turntable to strut their stuff.
