To welcome in the New Year I have these glorious Grand Motets by Lully. I find this spritual music incredibly rich and involving - the combination of a full period instrument orchestra and voices in the Chapel of Versailles is most compelling, with so much texture and atmosphere. There is an excellent article here on French motets of the period.

Thanks, Jules. I look forward to these with interest as my experience of Lully is not great.

Considering the Dies Irae seems to follow the running order of many Requiems, I found it disconcerting as I expected a Mozart-like feel to the movements (there was no overlap in their lives, Mozart was born after Lully died) and got something quite different. Thankfully, the De Profundis was much more in my comfort zone and very nice indeed. The Te Deum was full of bombast as to be expected. I'm not sure what I made of it all, superbly performed and recorded as it is.
I'm going with 3/5 for the De Profundis, especially.

Thanks Martin, am sure it would repay another listen now you are more familiar with it.

Not a music genre that I've paid any real attention to previously. The recording you cite, Jules, I find grates a bit after a while. I prefer the smoother, more obviously beautiful rendition of the Naxos album with Le Concert Spirituel.
I'd give the OP album 2/5,but the Naxos album 4/5. So I'll average out at 3/5.
Interesting choice!

I can't believe I missed this. I shall rectify that omission immediately.

4/5 for me. As opposed to Jerry, I thoroughly enjoyed the recording, and thought it conveyed the live "feel" beautifully. The drum sound, in particular, was absolutely spot on.
