I knew next to nothing about Pavarotti prior to watching this very enlightening documentary by Ron Howard.
You get a very intimate picture of the man with contributions by his family, colleagues and collaborators.
Obviously I knew he was a big star, but I didn't realise quite what a cult of celebrity surrounded him.

I saw the Three Tenors perform and it was a great show, but I struggle to think of a single recording where I recall his singing standing out for me.

Apart from any of the great operatic roles he sang, he made "Nessun Dorma," his own, and for me, nobody ever sang it better.
This "Che gelida manina" takes some beating too...
The same piece, when he was only 29 years of age.

In the film I particularly liked the clips of him singing standard repertoire instead of Nessun Dorma etc You can see why he managed to cement his reputation so quickly based on his quality.

The relationships and personal side of his life was something I also knew nothing about and was very interesting.

One of the things that set him above the good tenors, and made him a great tenor, was the fact that he could both sing, and act (within the confines of an operatic part) which is rarer than people may realise.

Yes the acting skills so important - the ability to inject such feeling into his roles by his singing and acting was quite remarkable.
