Van Morrison - Common OneI can't believe I haven't chosen a Van Morrison album yet as he is one of my all-time favourite artists through a long and somewhat varied career. However, his highs have been very high indeed, up there at Leonard Cohen level, and I have chosen an album I like very much but chances are that many of you will not have listened to. I was first introduced to Van the Man by a friend during my Uni years, who played me Moondance, and I was soon captivated. It's all in the songs and his quite unique singing style. He has a gift for a memorable tune and his voice is one of his strengths, used very much as an instrument. It isn't pretty, but from sensual to talking to outright shouting, he always imparts emotion not just in his words or sounds but in the manner of their delivery. Common One is not a well known or even particularly highly rated album, but Qobuz says it better than me: "Van Morrison was working through one of his greatest -- yet least appreciated -- creative periods when he made this album, one that burrows deeply into an introspective jazz-rooted spiritual groove". Exactly so, and I find all the songs of a high standard, exceptionally well performed and recorded. The opening 'side' (still thinking in LP terms) is really special with Haunts of Ancient Peace preceding Summertime in England, an extended jam. Satisfied is the stand-out track in the whole album. Featuring Hammond organ and a brass section 'competing' for attention, it never fails to please. Make sure to listen to Satisfied. Even if you don't like it, it will test your system's midrange clarity to its limit, as well as how it boogies to the rhythm. open.qobuz.com/track/44530501

Well thank God it's not Astral Weeks an album I just cannot get on with . Not heard much of his output due to the aforementioned album and his awful effort at Comfortably Numb on The Wall live in Berlin . Anyway I shall put all that aside and give it a shot .

Thanks, Barry. It's nothing like Astral Weeks, which is not a favourite of mine either.

I played this on and off throughout the day yesterday and I can't say it made much of an impact on me at all. The fact that I didn't jump up to sort the sound out when the battery feeding the RasPi died might be rather telling! Battery now refreshed - I'll give it another go.

Not sure what to make of this album, its what I would call inoffensive jazz, in parts it has a Miles or Masekala feel, Mark Isham is pretty good but it doesn't lift it for me. Maybe it's Van trying to be too laid back and cool.
I had a read up about this album and it appears it is often overlooked and those that like it consider it one of his best along with "Astral Weeks", just doesn't do it for me so its a 2/5.

A two from me, sadly. I say "sadly" because I do like a lot of Van's output, just not this one. Middling jazz with that annoying habit he has of turning a three-minute song into a five-minute song by repeating the last couple of lines, or the chorus, interminably over the outro, usually ending up scatting them like Cleo Lane's grumpy brother from Belfast. I did really enjoy the bass playing though.

2/5 from me too - I just don't get the Van Morrison thing. His voice is like the aural equivalent of mogodon for me - for some reason I find it as irritating as his COVID views.

I played the whole album again last night. I had never really thought of it as quite so jazz influenced, but of course it is. The bass is marvellous throughout and a special mention to Mark Isham on the various brass instruments, which sound fantastic and are very well recorded.
As for Morrison's voice, as I said up front it ain't pretty. It's often harsh and scrapey but it works and makes him sound unique. His ability to move from soft to bellowing is sometimes astonishing. The style of delivery is stream of consciousness. It's definitely an acquired taste.

It is well recorded and unfortunately slightly irritating part of this is Van vocal style and part of this is the light Jazz background music. A generous 2 from me.

I tried again with it, but I'm afraid that I got nowhere with it. I don't mind a bit of Van Morisson, as I have quite a few of his albums that get aired every once in a while, but this one won't be playing here again. I've played it several times now but just found it unremarkable. 2/5 from me too.

Weird I sort of liked this on the first listen it had a nice vibe and chilled me out , second listen when I was looking forward to it didn't get me the same way . Played a couple of tracks over the week and then gave the whole album a third listen , it started to grate a bit and the long track Summertime in England got on my bloody nerves , so Van the Man you nearly got me on a good day but in the end I escaped . 2/5

Thanks, everyone, for giving it a go. It just goes to show how very individual musical tastes are.

I have to admit I have been putting this off and have been feeling guilty about that. I always think I should like Van Morrison, but despite the superb musicianship on this album, I just cannot bear his voice and delivery. It has to be a 1 from me I'm afraid because as soon as he starts singing, the track is ruined for me. Sorry.
