I agree with the locked in part, it irks me somewhat but from the apple point of view it makes perfectly good business sense to have the fan culture they have. To have a customer who buys a mac mini, ipod, ipad iphone, icar, itoilet and ieye means a great big pile of money and a never ending upgrade path to the next itoilet.
I have to say though that having borrowed a macbook pro from my sister when the kids were doing teams lessons, the bloody thing is very very nice to use from a tactile standpoint. The other laptop feels rubbish to use.

I have avoided Naim having heard several systems with Naim amps, their sound was not for me, I avoided Linn mainly because a friend purchased an LP12 and he advised me and a friend not to buy one as at the time a Pink Triangle gave a better result for the money. One of the biggest reasons for me to avoid brands is the cost, and my inability to afford any of them. I'm Mr 'Audio on a budget.' I doubt I would ever buy Naim. I've never liked Bose, due to the smarmy salesmen who owned the store in Wellington. Arcam is too 'myeh' for me (though I do have 3 A&R Cambridge A60s). Never really wanted B&W either, no matter how good they may be. Have owned a few NAD amps for second systems or friends/family, but not going to buy any more. Lots of brands not available in NZ. And valve gear wouldn't fit in my 600x550x420mm cupboard, which houses all my stuff. I'm not allowed expensive, large, or ugly...which limits what I buy.

Ah Bose, I forgot about them. All marketing and poor quality. Horrible speakers using standard quality drivers.
Unfortunately, once again, it's a rational dislike.

Bowers and Wilkins.
Never heard anything of theirs, but my gut tells me they are second-rate.

It is easy to have a bias against brands with a slightly funny sounding name. One such example is Schiit Audio. First I thought it was a German name which goes on sounding unfortunate in English but no, this name was chosen by the some Californian audio enthusiasts as in "hey man, that's some really good Schiit!". The Schiit products are generally well reviewed. I have their Schiit Bifrost 2 DAC which in my system plays very lively and detailed. One reason not to buy is that (in the UK) Schiit products are mail order only.

If you were robbed, would you lose your Schiit?

It doesn't surprise me at all.
We had a spate of iPad screen failures last year. The replacements certainly didn't look new or retail packaged. The faulty ones were inoperable through no fault of the user, and were still in warranty. They should have been replaced with new.

Hang on, there are a lot of very high quality products coming from China these days. You can't really make a blanket statement like that.
